Description Here we have a picture representing the life of RMS (HMT) Olympic from her birth started in 1908 to her death in 1936.

With each stage you can see how Olympic changed over her time as an Oceanliner and her brief time as a Troop Carrier during World War 1.

As a Troop Carrier she was the only oceanliner in the War to ever sink a German U-Boat, she sank U-103 who attempted to Sink the Olympic but fail, Olympic however tried to ram the sub but her massive propellors sliced the hull of the sub, sinking it.

Olympic had several refits and overhauls during her life, these included the extra lifeboats after the sinking of younger sister and her coal burning boilers replaced with oil burning boilers.

In the end with dying trade, White Star and CUNARD merged, giving the newest CUNARD vessel the money needed to complete her at the cost of most of the older White Star liners being retired and this included the Olympic, the last of the Olympic Class liners. So in 1934 she was retired, 1935 partially demolished and in 1936, the rest of her hull was taken to Scotland for the final scrapping.

She lived for a short 24 years, nothing remains of her anymore apart from a few of her internal parts like her First Class Lounge that exists in an Hotel in Northern England.

Olympic never sank and neither did Queen MaryΒ  upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

RMS Olympic like the pic shows, and in the description, survived the entirety of her career and was sold for scrap in the 1930s

In my opinion, I think Titanic and Olympic were swapped. Some people even reported a slight list to port when on the "Titanic."

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to RedNinjaBull [2019-07-01 20:19:11 +0000 UTC]

what's the list got to do with anything and you can't just swap them, both Titanic and Olympic were too different for a simple name change to fool anyone. Olympic had a full open A-Deck Promenade, an entire B-Deck Promenade, none overhanging bridge wings, different placements for super structure windows, etc, do you really think they could have swapped them in so little time?

I think it was a planned sinking for a claim of insurance money. In order to save the White Star Line from financial deficit.

Even if that was true, which it is it would have cost them more that what ship was worth. But like i've said the swap is false and never happened, Titanic and Olypic were too different for a simple name swap.

The Olympic Class Curse ended

I disagree because Olympic survived everything thrown at it, she was even the only Oceanliner to sink a U-Boat, she achieved more in her career than most. It was the depression in the late 20s that sealed her fate.

Exactly
Olympic could have made an awesome sight as a preserved ship

A ship with a really outstanding career

Wish if they could rebuild it and paint it in "Troop Carrier" livery again because it looks absolutely amazing, and then hand it to the Norwegian Cruise Line, for example (NCL has a lot of colorful cruise ships).

What's the average lifespan of a modern cruiseship?

It is a shame she wasn't kept in service or at least preserved, she was the last of her sisters and something of a war hero to boot.

You have to put sentiment aside in this situation. (Although I do understand that feeling) Passenger ships have relatively short lifespans. They were typically depreciated at 4%-5% per year, assuming a useful economic life of 20-25 years. At that time they were not usually worn out mechanically, but became economically obsolete as newer ships were introduced. New liners were more fuel efficient, attracted more passengers and had more modern facilities. Olympic was in good condition in 1935 and certainly could have served many more years like Aquitania did. (But the end would still have been the scrapyard) However, in the combined Cunard White Star fleet she was losing more money than her running mates Aquitania, Berengaria & Majestic. One goal of the merger of Cunard & White Star was to rationalize the combined fleets. There were still too many ships in service for the traffic available. The pending arrival of the Queen Mary in 1936 meant 2 ships had to be withdrawn before long. That left the QM and 2 other liners to run with her until the Queen Elizabeth arrived in 1940 and then all the older express liners would be gone. (Obviously, WW2 interfered with that plan) The QM & QE would create a 2 ship express service that would be more economical than the 3 ship service andΒ ultimately proved very successful. Let’s use fuel use and speed as another example. The QM could cruise at 28.5 knots with about 1000 tons of fuel burned per day. Olympic, on the other hand, consumed roughly 540 tons of oil daily with a service speed of 21-22 knots. QM was also about 45% larger than Olympic with a more modern dΓ©cor and more space per passenger. Times change and ships have their lifespans. Shipping companies cannot afford to be sentimental. (Olympic was NOT scrapped to fund the construction of the QM)

Too all those Olympians (Olympic fans) She could've been preserved like Queen Mary, but as someone in the comments, there was uncertainty, and if she was preserved she would've fallen apart by 2000, the Queen Mary is much younger than the Olympic class liners but the Queen of LA is starting to fall apart, so chances are you still would've never gotten to walk upon her decks, sad but true.

Aye, twas a shame she was scrapped!Β  Can you imagine her value today if she had been preserved in a fresh water lock as a floating museum/resort?Β  But nostalgia wasn't "in" back in 1395, jobs and scrap iron were in foundering world wide economy uncertainty &Β  how certain nations were going to "react" to it (i.e. Germany, Italy & Japan).
