Description Here we have a picture representing the life of RMS (HMT) Olympic from her birth started in 1908 to her death in 1936.

With each stage you can see how Olympic changed over her time as an Oceanliner and her brief time as a Troop Carrier during World War 1.

As a Troop Carrier she was the only oceanliner in the War to ever sink a German U-Boat, she sank U-103 who attempted to Sink the Olympic but fail, Olympic however tried to ram the sub but her massive propellors sliced the hull of the sub, sinking it.

Olympic had several refits and overhauls during her life, these included the extra lifeboats after the sinking of younger sister and her coal burning boilers replaced with oil burning boilers.

In the end with dying trade, White Star and CUNARD merged, giving the newest CUNARD vessel the money needed to complete her at the cost of most of the older White Star liners being retired and this included the Olympic, the last of the Olympic Class liners. So in 1934 she was retired, 1935 partially demolished and in 1936, the rest of her hull was taken to Scotland for the final scrapping.

She lived for a short 24 years, nothing remains of her anymore apart from a few of her internal parts like her First Class Lounge that exists in an Hotel in Northern England.

If she wasn't scrapped she would've ended up as movie stand-ins for Titanic or possibly be refurbished to look like Titanic.

Olympic would have been turned into a hotel ship. Sad she was scrapped.

if she was a hotel ship, do you think she might be stationed at long beach?

I heard there was a chance Olympic could have been purchased by someone in France. But if that's the case, she could have been destroyed anyway by nazi bombings.

Or British bombing, UK destroyed a France fleet to get US involved, by showing they still kept on in the war between Germany. But actually Fat Churchill only did it because he disliked Frenchmen.

Nazis would most likely capture the shop and use it as theirs.

Do you have Britannic and titanic like this as well? Also on the Dazzle paint, there should be a gun turret on the port side of the forecastle deck. [link] You can see in this linked photo the turret next to the forward mast.

Great overview of the history of "The old realiable", overshadowed by sister ships, especially the Titanic. I particullary like the part of her history during the War and the fact that she managed to sink a U-Boat.

Noticed that the postwar painting differs slighly from the old one (the postition of the golden stripe).

Pity that she was not saved. The same was with ocean liner Batory. They keep her as a floating hotel for some time but later it was scrapped anyway.

Dear God, look what they did to her at the end of her career... She should have been retired and moored like the Queen Mary. Especially as the eldest and only surviving sister of the Olympic-Class Vessels of White Star. How Epic would it have been to have had the Olympic at Titanic's 100th anniversary cruise next year. I WOULD PAY TOP DOLLAR!!!

Btw epic pic here.

wonderfully done! the Olympic was a gorgeous liner and it's a real shame that she isn't around for us to enjoy today. in my opinion, scrapping her, the Mauritania, and the Aquitania were some of the biggest mistakes Britain ever made. but well done, the life cycle to a legend!

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to ZeroGal5 [2011-05-10 21:13:11 +0000 UTC]

thank you and i agree but in the case of Aquitania it was neccessary as she was litteraly falling apart. In her last voyage a piano fell through the deck

I completly agree with you about the stupidy of scraping her, though you must remember in 1936 the tensions that would eventualy explode into the second world war were building. Even if she wasn't scraped there is still a high probablity that she would have ended up on the sea floor from a u-boat, or worse, she could have been completely destroyed by a german Fritz bomb or a V-2.

wow, the dazzle scheme especially is impressive.

Always held a soft spot for RMS Olympic. Something about her that was different from her sisters.

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to Railwolf [2010-05-12 09:11:57 +0000 UTC]

She was the first, the original, she hardly ever differed from her original design, Titanic had her changes so she wasn't a complete copy of her sister and Britannic was modified after the sinking of Titanic which changed her even more, Olympic seemed to hardly ever find herself in a position that could lead to her sinking, i think she should of sank at some point, that way she'd still be here today like her sisters.

ConorXPetunia In reply to Lex-the-Pikachu [2010-06-24 04:18:47 +0000 UTC]

How could you say something like that? Then we wouldn't have her grand staircase and other furnishings with us! (Seriously, someday I want to go to the swan hotel and see some of her paneling)

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to ConorXPetunia [2010-06-24 12:51:44 +0000 UTC]

thats all we have, nothing of the ship herself, just a room. There is no hull, no nothing. There is still Titanic and Britannic for us to see, despite them degrading gradually, we can still see what they were like when they were built

ConorXPetunia In reply to Lex-the-Pikachu [2010-06-25 05:28:38 +0000 UTC]

But when Titanic and Britannic are gone, all we'll have left is some china and other artifacts.

The Olympic was an amazing ship, and was definately my favorite of the Olympic-class. It had a long and amazing career that would make an awesome movie! It's sad that it was scrapped.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to Promus-Kaa [2010-05-12 09:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Yea, she was the first, and the last, i would of thought they could of saved her since she was the last of Olympic Class.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Lex-the-Pikachu [2010-05-13 00:32:28 +0000 UTC]

Exactly; the Titanic had been a famous ship for a good 20 years when 1935 rolled around...you'd think they'd at least preserve it for historical reasons, since, you know, it's impossible to raise the Titanic. Preserving the Olympic would be the next best thing!

PLUS the Olympic was 1000 times more badass than the Titanic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to Promus-Kaa [2010-05-13 10:39:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure Titanic would of been just as badass if she served in the war too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to Lex-the-Pikachu [2010-05-13 18:56:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but she hit an iceberg before the war ever happened, so there goes that possibility.

Besides, even if she did survive, she'd probably end up hitting mines or hitting submarines and SINKING from it, or the like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

GearGades In reply to ??? [2010-05-11 14:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Olympic was truly unsinkable. Prior to Titanic's loss, she was refer to as practically unsinkable while Titanic was refer as unsinkable. Titanic was then lost, Olympic & Britannic redesign.

Britannic would later be deemed as "a perfect specimen of man's creative power as is possible to conceive". She would later be lost too.

Olympic truly live the dream.

RIP, R.M.S. Olympic

Lex-the-Pikachu In reply to GearGades [2010-05-11 14:59:14 +0000 UTC]

Definately, Olympic suffered the hits first, repaired and continued her life, but her sisters were unlucky, maybe if one of her sisters survived, Olympic may of lived longer.
