Sir Dick Grayson decided to pop the question to Lady Barbara Gordon on a special occasion...
--Excerpt -- [link]
Dick and Barbara arrived at the front doors of Palais de Gotham precisely at 8pm. Alfred pulled the limousine away fron the curb as Dick waved to him, then Dick turned an opened the door for Barbara. She started to wheel herself forward, but Dick held the door open with his foot and pushed her in.
"I'm perfectly capable of moving myself, Dick," she said with slight amusment at his contortions.
"I know. I just don't want you getting your hands dirty on the wheels," Dick replied.
"Are you implying something about the cleanliness of my wheelchair?" she asked playfully.
"No, I'm implying something about the cleanliness of Gotham's sidewalks," Dick said as he handed thier coats over to the valet. Then he pushed her over to the maitre'd's podium.
"Bon soir, Monsieur Grayson," the maitre'd greeted Dick in the snooty way that only the most high-class of waiters can manage. "Your table is already prepared. Please follow me."
Dick pushed Barbara over to a table by the window of the expensive restaurant while the maitre'd set out their menus.
"The soup this evening is pomme de terre and leek and the chef's special is the filet mignon with steamed asparagus and rice pilaf. The sommelier will be along momentarily to take your wine order," the maitre'd said with a slight bow.
"Thank you," Dick replied. The maitre'd made his polite escape and left the couple in peace.
Both Dick and Barbara surreptitiously dipped electronic poison testers into their water, noticed that the other was doing exactly the same thing, and burst out laughing.
"So what's the occaision for this expensive evening, Mr. Grayson?" Barbara asked.
"What? I can't take my girlfriend out for a nice dinner?" Dick asked with mock indignance.
"Knowing the company we keep? No, not really," Barbara replied.
"Well, in that case, you'll just have to be surprised," Dick said with a smirk.
"Think about who you're talking to, Dick. I really doubt I'll be surprised," Barbara countered.
The sommelier arrived and cut off any further conversation on that topic, and the meal proceeded from there. Just after finishing the meal, conversation paused and Dick just sat there staring at Barbara.
"What is it?" She asked him.
"I'm just psyching myself up," Dick said.
"Oh no. You can't be serious," Barbara gasped, guessing what was to come.
"But, I am, Miss Gordon," Dick said as he slid from his seat, dropped to one knee in front of her, and pulled a ring box out of his jacket pocket. "Would you do me the honour of making me the happiest man on Earth, or any other planet?"
Dick flicked the box open to reveal a gorgeous diamond engagement ring with the gems set in the shape of an eye.
"Yes, oh, yes yes yes," Barbara dissolved into tears as she slid forward in her wheelchair to kiss Dick.
The happy couple was surprised when the other diners broke into polite applause and a waiter arrived with a bottle of champagne 'compliments of Miss Wendy Harris'.
"So that's how you managed it," Barbara said once she regained her composure.
"You bought the ring while Proxy was running things."
"And I had her scrub all the phone records and e-mails that I used to order the design," Dick agreed.
Barbara stretched out her hand to admire the ring now upon her left ring finger.
"It really is beautiful, Dick," she complimented.
"No more than the woman it belongs to," Dick countered.

Same here. But, I don't get in the way of people's ships. So the commissioner wanted Gordon/Grayson, and that's what I gave him.

Always hated DC for the storyline that got Barbara Gordon shot and partially paralyzed. It seemed to me me, and still does now that it was cruel and just part of a plot device. I guess they were trying to introduce the real world into the Batgirl universe but it did shock and disappoint many fans.
I realize DC went on to re-introduce her as Oracle, and eventually she was medically "cured" or rehabilitated, or cyber-enhanced. And, they introduced several other Batgirls to take her place. But as a first-viewing watcher of the old Batman series (yes, I'm THAT old), Barbara Gordon will always be Batgirl to me.
I have two good friends (one has passed, now) who were confined to wheelchairs. They taught me a lot about respect for handicapped persons and how really hard it is for them to have a normal life. Both of them (husband and wife) lived life to the fullest, and never let up.
