I found this meme on social media. And it pretty much describes the below rant.

If you want to write a good movie, find a good writer who will make the protagonist’s flawed and vulnerable, have them overcome hardships and make them relatable to the audience. Sadly, due to fourth wave feminism having such a stranglehold on the media, the formula for *MODERN AUDEINCES* must be obsessively and annoyingly adhered to. Especially if it’s Disney.

The irony here is that it’s becoming predictable, contrived and ultimately played out, and Disney is haemorrhaging money left and right. Add the recent self-own by the company releasing press images of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Seriously, WTF were those dwarfs?!) and claiming those images were faked before backtracking and admitting they were real, and it’s not hard to see why it wouldn’t be a great loss if the company went bust.

Still, there are several recent examples of how to write a female lead without pandering to the annoying girl-boss stereotype - Grace in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One is a prime example. Hayley Atwell portrays her in a likeable, confident, flawed, charismatic and beautiful manner without coming across as being smug and condescending (looking at you, Phoebe Waller Bridge). Qualities that would make her not only a perfect Lara Croft, but also an excellent James Bond girl. By the end of the movie, she’s ready to sign up with the IMF and will definitely be returning in Part 2 next year.

What drives a movie forward is logical storytelling. It’s not that hard!
