With the trailer for Alien: Romulus dropping yesterday, it will be at least 147 days before Fede Álvarez’s stand-alone project, set 37 years after the event of Alien, is released on the big screen. And judging by some scenes in the trailer, the big chap, an early stages pulse rifle, and what looks like a grim facehugger clip, it could be a return to its horror roots.

But, in my humble opinion, there is one chapter in the Alien universe that deserves more recognition and the live action treatment. And that is Alien: Isolation. One of the best video games in the Alien franchise in a long time. Ditching the run and gun nature of the execrable Colonial Marines and set 15 years after the Nostromo incident, the story revolves around Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, investigating the disappearance of her mother. Her quest brings her to Sevastopol, a large space station being decommissioned due to economic instability. Not only does Amanda have to deal with frightened and paranoid looters who shoot on sight, but also a lone Xenomorph, which has massacred the station's inhabitants and is now pursuing her…

Imagine Amanda negotiating the dark and foreboding corridors of Sevastopol, hearing every creak and moan in the walls, trying to stay one step ahead of the Xenomorph and uncovering the REAL truth as to why civil order aboard the station has broken down. Even the Working Joes (practical effects please) would make for some genuinely unsettling and terrifying set pieces where Amanda fights them off, as well as the aforementioned nest sequence that will have even the most hardened of horror fans sleeping with the light on for a week. Pure sci-fi horror in a nutshell.

The 70’s lo-fi retro technology, clunky machinery, and architecture that Creative Assembly paid incredible detail to stays true to the setting and feel of Alien, and the audio logs detailing residential life aboard Sevastopol paint a clever story as to how things went south pretty quickly. So it would be a no brainer to flesh these events (The subsequent outbreak, Seegson selling Sevastopol to Weyland Yutani et al) out in a TV series before the real story begins.

As for the casting of Amanda Ripley, people seem to select Mary Elizabeth Winstead, which isn’t a bad choice on it’s own merits. And it would be a crime if this tale never got the live action treatment.

Sadly, it never even got a sequel. But you never know….
