My jaw dropped after I saw an episode of "Adventure Time" for the first time. I had avoided it assuming that it was mear kidstuff.
In fact it is the most subversive cartoon since "Rocky and Bullwinkle".
Oddly this first episode was the one in which Marceline's dad sucks the souls out of the inhabitants of an otherwise benign fantasy land.
It is possible to be both a vampire and goth, just as Spike from "Buffy" proved one could be both a vampire and punk.
It is offically cool to like Marceline.

Well TECHNICALLY it was a Nicktoon first, or at least the pilot was, but they didn't pick it up as a series. But yeah, I love Marcelline, I mean, ya GOTTA. And it's certainly much more mature than you'd think, I mean, the entire premise of the show is that our world got nuked and theirs rose from the ashes. Not that the un-nuked world was much better off, what with the gangs and stuff, honestly, it seemed worse, and then there's the whole Ice King thing and... I'mma zip it cause I could go on about this for a while, but it's definitely something set in an adult world, it's merely presented in a way children can enjoy it. In closing, love the flirty look on that sexy vampire lady.

The pilot was aired on Nickelodeon but Nick passed down the pilot and Cartoon Network picked up the pilot. So the series doesn't classify as a Nicktoon at all.

It has the look of something made for small children, yet its message is aimed at a much older audience.

It's one of those shows I classify, "More fun than should be legal." I reached that conclusion when they brought out Lumpy Space Princess.
