Description
More of my astronomical art can be seen in my DA "Space Art" gallery:lexlothor.deviantart.com/galle…
In 2014 I saw "2001: A Space Odyssey for the 18th time. It was also the first time since the 1970's that I had seen it on the big screen. Most notably, it was the first time I had EVER seen it in its original 70mm Cinerama glory! I had missed the limited re-release that had occurred in the actual year 2001. I had been too busy chasing dinosaurs in Utah that summer.
I had vowed that I would see it in 70mm at least once before I die. This was it.
I took the opportunity of seeing the film at the Cinerama theater in Seattle, Washington. The screening was accompanied by a live appearance of the movie's special effects wizard Douglas Trumbull (also known for "Star Trek TMP" and "Bladerunner"). I did not know this but the Seattle Cinerama is one of only THREE such cinemas left in the world! The others are the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles (where I saw "Logan's Run" on July 4, 1976) and another in London. I had not set foot in the Seattle Cinerama since the opening day of "The Return of the Jedi" in 1983, so it was like visiting an old friend.
In 70mm my eye caught details I had NEVER seen before and others I had forgotten. For example the IBM logo is everywhere in the movie.
The movie "2001" was the most important film I ever saw in my life. When I saw it at the age of ten in 1968, it forever expanded my mind without the aid of chemical intervention.
As I have been producing a series of art card dedicated to recapturing the enchantment of science fiction films and TV of my youth, I simply HAD to include an image from "2001" in the set.

I'm glad you got to see this movie in Cinerama and in 4K.

Nice pic!
2001 made a huge impression on me, too. I must have been 15 when I saw it; in London. I don't remember what theatre, but I remember the details and the very different feel it had to all the, by comparison, crappy-looking TV sci-fi I had seen before.

This is beautiful. The lights, and the illumination they shed on the surroundings, are particularly effective.

THANX.
I was going for the look of a Sixties black light poster.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!! this is wonderful!
I love the color scheme and the contrast. The landscape looks so pretty and alien. This is my favorite of all your art cards.

Gee, thanx.
During the stargate sequence of "2001" under cranked flyovers of desolate landscapes were used to represent alien worlds. False color negatives were generated to create a psychedelic effect. This drawing only approximates the electric koolaid acid appearance of that process.

I like this better. Truth to be told, I'm not particullary fond of that secuence of the movie. It's one of my favorites, but I don't like that part very much.
That trip in the book is very creepy.
