SPOILER ALERT!!!

In the 1968 film version of "Barbarella" the Great Tyrant first encounters Barbarella while in disguise. B. refers to her as the "One-Eyed Wench".

GT: "You are so pretty, pretty my Pretty-Pretty."

B: "My name isn't Pretty-Pretty, it is Barbarella."

This scene takes place in an alley in the sin-city of Sogo.
GT has just saved B. from a gang rape by thrusting her ever-so-cool articulated stilletoes into their backs. The lesbian over tones of this sequence are overt. GT has just
saved B. and wants to claim her PRIZE.

So far there have been two unsuccessful attempts to remake this movie. One would have starred Drew Barrymore. A more recent project would have starred Rose MacGowan. The original with Jane Fonda is so low budget by today's standards that my daughter refers to it as "cheesetastic". It is still fun to watch.

After having a spate of KP pics purged by the know-nothings, I had to detatch the "Kimerella" series from my other KP art, so now they get only a fraction of the views they had previously received.

I can sure see the logic behind removing those plastic bits...and you certainly won't hear any complaints from me about the go-go getup's future appearances. And yes, for a flick as trippy as "Barbarella," overt use of pointy objects would be a serious buzzkill.

Several thoughts, in no particular order:

(1) Despite the crazy bikini-line cutout, the Great Green Tyrant's outfit (and accessories) are starting to seriously grow on me, and Kimber's dainty little getup forms quite the contrast here.

(2) The eyes (or eye in one party's case) most certainly have it here...whether conveying predatory desire or a sort of exasperated dismay, the shade of green you employed just leaps off the 'canvas.'

(3) Gads, is this an uncomfortable sitch from Kimber's perspective...her benefactor's wrist-shiv looks one twitch away from putting a permanent part in her eyebrow, which of course lends the necessary au-thor-i-tah to GT's overtures. Talk about out of the frying pan, into the plasma furnace.

Yet again, great work.

The original One-eyed Wench costume from the movie had a clear plastic stomach piece covering the solar plexus replete with a navel (something akin to a Roman leather breastplate. I deleted it. Similarly Barbarella wore a costume with a cut out for one breast that was covered by a plastic breast that included a nipple.

The white plastic go-go suit worn by Kimerella is essentially my own adaptation of a similar costume that appears in another sequence in the film. A more elaborate version (with white gloves and a choker) appears in my DA pic "Protecting the Galaxy". I may yet revisit this outfit.

In the movie, the Tyrant in disguise only lightly brushes Barbarella's cheek.

BTW: The outfit worn by Shego appeared in the March 1968 issue of PLAYBOY in the pictorial dedicated to "Barbarella" I have used my vintage copy as a reference.

In the original the white outfit had a lot of additional clutter. The vertical black bands are essentially garters that run from shoulder to heel.

I haven't freeze-framed my DVD of "Barbarella", so I don't know who was the costume designer. Perhaps I should look up the costume credit. The costumes in the movie differ from those in Forest's comicbook. I have modified several of the designs seen in the film. The black feather number worn by Anita Pallenberg in other scenes was too silly so I replaced it with something more practical. I am curious to see what will be done in the Rodriguez re-make. I asume they will be even darker and kinkier.
I have simplified Barbarella's white plastic "go-go" outfit in the manner required by animation. The peekaboo panties are my idea.

PS: You had me consult my Deutsch Woerterbuch/English dictionary, but I got your message. Danke.

BTW: This image has gotten more hits in the first 24 hours than any other picture I have posted to date.

I took liberties with the scene from the movie. It takes place in a dark alley so I chose a blue slate background. Shego wears an (almost) exact replica of the costume worn by Anita Pallenberg in the film.
I eliminated several sets of chains that were a visual clutter. Barbarella had a completely different outfit on in this scene. I used my version of the white plastic suit just to contrast with the black leather and Tuscan red suede cut-away job worn by the GT.

I really like the light/shadow-effects and the coloration. Did you use pastels or wax crayons?

THANX

I am always happy to share my "secrets".

1) I sketch the outline on velum or tracing paper.

2) With a very hard pencil point I trace the sketch and emboss the image into a sheet of illustration board.

3) I lay a white line into the grooves I have pressed into the board so that the image looks like chalk on a blackboard.

4) I never start with a white background, unless I want to depict a polar bear. The background color you see is the actual sheet of matte/illustration board. The choice of the paper dictates everything that follows.

5) I lay a ground of color pencil with harder matrix and higher wax content in the areas within the outlines. This is a little like a coloring book or painting an animation cel. Oddly, most artists I see who use color pencil usually stop at this very PRELIMINARY stage. The result is visible pencil strokes and a lot of the paper showing through. I keep going!

6) I then take high quality (high pigment to vehicle content) color pencils and fill in the figure areas with a richer more opaque layer that completely covers the first layer (which does show through a bit). Microscopically this looks like shoving powdered snow around with a plough!

Shadow effects are created by using LESS pencil in the areas that are to remain darker.

7) I spray the entire image with a workable acrylic fixative. This seals the earlier colored areas so that the pigment will not interact with later layers.

8) Pencil colors of lighter shades are layered over existing color areas so that the picture begins to look like a photograph emmerging from a developing solution.

9) Once all colored areas are fully filled, I add highlights and brightly illuminated areas in acrylic paints with a fine brush.
