The toothed cat or "tiger" is a common element at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. This North American Pleistocene species is well known from hundreds of examples. It is presumed that many were caught in the asphalt seeps when the ventured over soft ground to scavenge on larger prey animals that got bogged down in the tar.
Smilodon was unlike the big cats with which we are familiar. Its long stabbing canines are its hallmark. It may have been a ambush predator. Whether it was a pack animal like lions or solitary predators like tigers is a matter of debate. It had a long, heavily muscled neck that may have given it a bear-like profile.
This skeleton is on display at the Museum of Ancient Life near Salt Lake City, Utah.
