Description Dalek Time Controller: Empire era

Genetically synced to the time vortex and housed in a casing designed to focus temporal radiation, the Dalek Time Controller was highly sensitive to fluctuations and mutations in the web of time. It was charged with overseeing Dalek time-travel operations and ensuring that they did not endanger the Dalek race as a whole. In these matters, it had complete authority, beyond even that of the Dalek Supreme.

--

I do like this model. Really pleased with how it turned out! Incidentally, I see the creation of this thing (in universe) to be where the Time War really began...

The Daleks were a team effort, really, but I was not part of that team. The Dalek Time Controller was created by Nick Briggs and first visualised by Brian Williamson ([link] ). This version is based on that design and the model created by Big Finish's in-house artists.

Makes me curious when the Dalek Time Controller operated, during the First Empire when the Emperor was in his Prime or when the Emperor was that Supreme with that Susan/Emperor Hybrid.

Dalek Hierarchy question: would you place this Dalek above or below the red Supreme Controllers from the empire era?

Above and beyond all the rest. It has the authority to completely take charge of all Dalek operations, so it must be at least on par with the Supreme, possibly higher even than the Emperor given the extent of its powers - being able to see all of history and the Daleks' place in it gives it insight too valuable to ignore.

Would love to see an Imperial Dalek take on the Dalek Time Controller. What with the gold and white livery colour scheme and the gyro rings in gold, not to mention the inbuilt blue lighted sphere - like your Imperial Dalek blue eye stalk lighting - I bet it would look a cracker!

Hmm....nice idea....I might give it a whirl - after all, the Time Controller is likely to have ended up with many, many alternate versions!

Please! Im begging ya'!

Yeah I had wondered about the Time Controller travelling through time and having multiple versions, perhaps even some planted by himself in different realities...

With that gold and white livery but making use of the gentle aqua-blue lighting it would be thing of beauty.

Words cannot describe how much I love this. I love the glow you included from the original design. It's a shame they didn't include it in the future artworks with the audios.

I like this Dalek. He's one of the most cunning and intresting character Briggs has ever created. Can't wait to hear what the future holds. I think more Timelord VS Dalek Shennanigans.

Thank you! I think he's a good character too - and I treat the stories he's in as the leading edge of the Time War, probably the only Time War stories we'll ever see made. He certainly seems to be gunning for the Time Lords specifically, doesn't he?

I agreed, and said it's only because the rings were attached in my remake of your version.

Theres a similar Dalek in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine [454] on page 17.

It's blue and silver, and seems to be a late 60's era Dalek.

Yep, that's the model on which this one was based. It looks really good in those pictures, too...

(Sorry, I should have made my sources clear in the notes on this picture. I did state who's responsible for it in another picture, but I've added the information to this one for clarity)

Looks great. Not being a fan of Big Finish generally I'd never heard of the Time Controller until you posted an earlier image a few days ago. It looks great - the minimalism of the containment rings match the Dalek aesthetic perfectly and having them levitate hints at extremely sophisticated technology. I'm even impressed that the elongated neck basket manages to work so well aesthetically. I assume the timey-wimey ball is an evolution of the spherical Dalek time controller device in "Remembrance"?

Librarian-bot In reply to Kasterborous [2012-09-15 22:24:54 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if that was the original design intention, but I like to think so.

The stories the Time Controller appears in are some of the best Big Finish has done, so I kind of hand to make him - beyond which, he's such an curious design that it was a irresistible challenge.

It took me a while get the extended mesh right, so I'm glad it worked. Brian Williamson's original illustration has it extending right to the base of the neck, with the arms pushed down into the skirt, in place of the top-most row of sensor globes. I couldn't get that to work, so went with this. I think I made the right choice...

Librarian-bot In reply to puma7372 [2012-09-13 12:05:51 +0000 UTC]

Yep. I find it slightly odd Nick Briggs used the same voice - I think its his standard 'Dalek without a casing' voice (even though the Time Controller does have a casing...) since he uses it elsewhere for that. I guess he's just trying to make them sound different from normal.

And in answer to your other comment, I might well make a NDP Time Controller. Just not sure what it would look like yet.

Kasterborous In reply to Librarian-bot [2012-09-13 13:01:14 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it's also the only real way to differentiate which Dalek is speaking on audio. Even when they are voiced by different people they can be hard to tell apart. I think it's his "intellectual Dalek" voice - the Dalek Prime Minister's line "what do you know of the Dalek Asylum?" did sound, in both wording and tone, awfully like something Davros might have said.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Librarian-bot In reply to Kasterborous [2012-09-14 11:36:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think you're right about his use of that particular tone.

Funnily enough, there are bits in Dalek Empire where you really can hear that there are two different voice actors working there. It does make quite a bit of difference and, I have to say, it's something I miss on the small screen. It'd be nice to have someone else there to break up the Briggs monopoly - as good as he is, I think it would help make the Daleks seem a bit more varied.

Kasterborous In reply to Librarian-bot [2012-09-14 13:11:15 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it makes sense in-universe for the Daleks, being as they have an artificial voice and aren't likely to want to make concessions to the aesthetic senses of other races, to standardise on a single voice. Out-of-universe, of course, it can get really silly with Briggs doing EVERY SINGLE ALIEN VOICE, especially when he's voicing more than one race at once - one of many reasons why the Daleks and the Cybermen bitching at each other in "Doomsday" was somewhat embarrassing.
