Cool, don't know that tune, and I was a pretty big Cure fan in the 80s. Thanks.

Welcome. The only way I know about the song is because I have a Cure Greatest Hits CD and it is on the disc. Another one that I never knew.

BTW, is limestone dust a fairly common commodity where you are?

No it's not, I have been using different stone dusts in my work for a long time, I used sand, then discovered builders yards and used Portland stone dust, then I met someone who I shared a studio space with. The limestone and alabaster dust was collected for me by a sculptor friend some time ago, in that shared studio... I was teaching her painting, and she in turn collected interesting dust for me. She's not with us now, unfortunately, but she was a special woman...

So, the answer is, the dust in the recent work came from the making of these sculptures.

I won't bore you with why, but having stone dust in my work is essential to me.

I did visit Esther's page and she was definitely a talented sculptor with a fascinating biography.

She was a lovely woman, one of the few artists I really respect personally...which was mutual.

The stone dust is obviously what gives your art its unique magic.
Actually, I googled limestone dust because I had never heard of it before. Seems it has a lot of uses in the construction industry.
So in a way, Esther lives on in your work.

Well, not just the stone dust, there's more about them than that, and it does get lost in early layers of the work sometimes.

The story of the stone from which the dust came goes back in time millions of years, that's one of the points of using it, like making hieroglyphs on tablets of stone.

Some of it is from her some of it is from other places. The alabaster is definitely from her though, so yes, that does include her in the story and it's nice to think that is the case, but she lives on much more in her sculptures and her book and much more so in the hearts of her students, one of which was my next door neighbour, I never was, like I said I was teaching her. We were the only full time artists there, so we used to stop and drink coffee and talk a lot. Was a lovely woman...and brave, she took on those massive slabs of stone and made things happen. Nice to be able to share her work.
