Actually the economy went to hell before he got into office. Wall Street crashed and the housing market imploded before he got elected president. He has been trying to clean up the mess the previous administration left. He even told the american people during his inauguration speech that he won't be able to fix everything during his administration.
Its not his fault that american businesses has been trying to cut cost by laying off their employees. Its also not his fault that the conservative republicans keep blocking anything he tries to pass through congress.
