I would think before hitting the gigantic universe of Marvel and DC you should hit up some of the classic video game characters first. I lolo was a throw back but what about Little mac from punch out, Geno or Mallow from Mario RPG, Simon Belmont from Castlevania? Ray Jack from Kings Knight or Roche from Astyanax, The legendary warrior from Rygar. The loveable characters goes on. Like the dragon warrior/dragon quest franchise would really spice things up. That might help two with the heavily male sidedness the fighting game roster could get.

Geno would be nice, but a longshot. Mallow has no chance unless an Assist Trophy.
Simon Belmont is so old, Dracula or hector would be better but they backstabbed nintendo by going with Sony.
