Description Phew! Page 3 of Light at the End. I would've submitted it earlier in the day, but I decided to start tweaking and we all know how that goes. But I'm much happier with the flow now.

Working on a personal project is so satisfying. When I'm heading home to work on my own pages, I find myself taking strides a couple inches longer than normal. Some days, you feel like a Sim (as in you shower and eat not because it feels good, but because your hunger and cleanliness meters are low). But having something to work on that you love makes everything so much more engaging.

My Anamanaguchi pandora station has strayed clear to Moka, so I've probably been on the computer long enough. Thank you for your support, and have a wonderful day.

The way Logic towers over the girl,
it again gives off that father-figure vibe,

His stoic expression, coupled with his articulate reasoning,
also gives me a sense of wisdom!

And yet, between these two, it symbolically shows how he's (seemingly) aloof to her pain.

YES! This is why I roll my eyes at all the people (a lot of them artists!) who protest the idea of work that 'won't make money'. It's not all about money, you know!

This just gets more gorgeous by the page. Any idea of how long the story will be?

I would have to agree. If you're in art only for the money and not because you find enjoyment in it... you need to find a new job.
But then again, it's really nice to be able to pay your bills. It's a balance that every artist needs to work out.

The story is actually finished: Just ten pages long. Follow the links in the description and they will lead you to the end!

I know what you mean. Life is so much better when you're really working on a story. ^^

I really like how your doing the perspective here. Makes the guy in white look very daunting.

You're welcome.
Well, I've got lots of writing projects(like Bright Light), but the only comic I'm actually posting here right now is Goofatopia.

Thanks! Colors are tough for me. I need to learn some theory.

He sorta looks like Tintin's smarmy older brother.

How'd you pick/do the colors? And how does the texture work into that? I don't know much about photoshop, but I'm starting to get the sense it does more special things than the gimp. Like having cool, cool brushes, with watercolor-drip effects and such. So... layer masking? Colors? How?

LightlyBow In reply to animatrix1490 [2011-01-22 23:47:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, my version of photoshop isn't expensive enough to have masking, but I make do. Basically, I just have a lot of layers (This image had 25 visible ones) and mess with the opacity and brightness on everything. Some of the layers are simply a wash of color, often only on a small piece of the picture, like a hand or something. Choosing colors the first time is really hard and long for me because I don't know color theory, but the palette is pretty much set, so I don't have to worry about it anymore.

I'm not using any effects: Most of the interest and tone variation in the background comes from the texture. There are several layers of texture: one in the very back, one for the ghosty hands, one for the girl. (I got some really nice free textures from here [link] ) Basically it's a lot of experimentation until I feel satisfied.

Also: Smarmy is a good word. A very good word.

Cool. Thanks for taking the time to type all that out. I'll work hard, too. I don't have to be limited by my tools--I'll still be able to make good stuff. Like you do!

...Yes. Yes, it is.
