Description

After seeing the official art of The Sorcerer from “Spyro: The Shadow Legacy,” I always felt uncomfortable with how ugly he appeared in official art and in-game or in cutscenes, considering we rarely see dragons that look like him in the Original Series and he once blabbed about “being a real dragon.” After seeing some fan art made by other people on Google Images and DeviantArt, mainly the latter, I wanted to draw him so badly. I attempted drawing him a few times (Will be posting them later), but each time I did resulted to awkward and ugly drawings that, in exaggeration, make the official art of The Sorcerer look like the freaking Mona Lisa! XD So sometimes when I fail the accuracy of the official design of a character, I ditch the anatomy and rely on my own art style to structure the body of the character, which is what I did on the first artwork I’ve posted that included the Rito Champion Revali from “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” during the time we only got very few footages, artworks, and screenshots of the Champion and before the game was released. Turned out to be a good decision on my part in the case of making my own interpretation of The Sorcerer.

I wanted to make some sort of “Reimagining” of his character design and imagine what he could have alternatively looked like under his dark concealing cloak, plus the possibility of The Sorcerer being the Original series’ counterpart of Malefor from “The Legend of Spyro” series, so I used pictures of his large dragon form and Malefor as references to go by in design. Thus, resulted with a somewhat combination of 3 designs (Malefor and The Sorcerer’s both forms), which was what I wanted out of the processing of his design, making him look like as if he was somehow a part of the dragon race commonly portrayed in the series.

During the making of the digital artwork of The Sorcerer, I wondered to myself “what would happen if he was a Dragon Elder, but was banished a long time ago,” but we already have Red who was just like that, so I ditched the idea, but then around the same time I imagined him being an old dragon with a past that altered his potentially lively future into a sadder one. So I established in my headcanon of him.

1st Version: Malefor of Prodigy was one of the dragon inhabitants who was loved by many in his past, widely revered for being a rare purple dragon who was efficient and was first-rate on the art of magic, which his powers were amplified with the simplified, but elegant Scepter he received from a celebration dedicated to his brave and inspiring achievements. However, his arrogance, his sense of superiority, and his self-loving magic dragon pride got to him and he started to become ambitious to the point that he started desiring for more power. He sometimes blathers about what makes a “real dragon.” He then later found himself in the clutches of corruption by his new-found power of ancient and forbidden dark magic, which led to his embarrassing and ugly transformation (Enter Shadow Legacy form). In his new body, the traitorous decision of reaching for Shadow Magic for the sake of personal gain gave him a horrible image and reputation among his people and he was swiftly referred as a “mutant” or “monster.” Because of his drastic downgrade of his powers, he relies on his scepter more to use his magic. And due to the heavy prejudice against him, he fled from the Dragon Kingdom and ran to the care and shelter of the Shadow Sanctuary (Or the Fallen Sanctuary) in a faraway land, where he gained his new-found forbidden powers before stealing a Shadowstone. With his abilities and his Shadowstone, along with his new monstrous Minions, he discovered the Shadow Realm and built the Shadow Amplifiers to trap and imprison inhabitants of the light world as payback for the immense suffering and his emotional corruption and took out his wrath of power on them this way, while having his self-image emotional issues and thus still holding on to his beliefs of what makes a “real dragon” and what makes him a “real dragon.”

2nd Version: Malefor of Prodigy was one of the dragon inhabitants who was loved by many in his past, widely revered for being a rare purple dragon who was efficient and was first-rate on the art of magic, along with his rare element of Aether, exclusive to Purple Dragons. His magic powers were amplified with the simplified, but elegant Scepter he received from a celebration dedicated to his brave and inspiring achievements. However, his arrogance, his sense of superiority, and his over-confidence got to him and he became ambitious as his power and knowledge grew far more than anyone had imagined, including his growing lust for power then later found himself in the clutches of corruption by his new-found power of ancient and forbidden dark magic. Fearing his lack of restraint, the Elders banished Malefor into exile from the Dragon Kingdom and he ran to the care and shelter of the Shadow Sanctuary (Or the Fallen Sanctuary) in a faraway mountainous land, where he gained his new-found forbidden powers before stealing a Shadowstone prior to the banishment. With his abilities and his Shadowstone, along with his new monstrous Minions, he discovered the Shadow Realm and built the Shadow Amplifiers to trap and imprison inhabitants of the light world as payback for the immense suffering and his emotional corruption and took out his wrath of power on them by this way.

So in the 1st Version, he has a transformation from this design into his Shadow Legacy form and flees from his homeland. His character remains more consistent with his canon counterpart. I imagine him with only 1 pair of wings in his transformed self under the cloak, but doesn't use them much due to the use of his powers.

In the 2nd Version, almost everything stays the same, but he does not have the undesirable transformation and he kept his reimagined form throughout, but his eyes changed from a white with yellow irises to black with yellow slit irises or pupils. He was also banished by the leaders of his kingdom for his refusal to stop on his drive for more of what he desired instead of fleeing by his free will due to unimaginable prejudice and discrimination. His character in this version follows identically to Malefor’s story from “The Legend of Spyro” series. He keeps his 2 pairs of wings.

If you’re wondering if I’ll give him a love interest, I’ll have you know that I’ve been thinking about that as I was typing the story here, but I decided against it since it wouldn’t make much of a purpose in his story, especially considering on how he was portrayed in the game he appeared and I don’t want to alter too much of his character outside the character redesign. Already did that with Bubsy the Bobcat lol.
