Description Rainbow Dash must have forgot, In the heat of the moment, that only Pegasus can be on clouds.

Anyway the semester is over and now that I’ve heartily failed my finals I can focus on pony. Well maybe.

What happened was that Rainbow Dash compacted the cloud into a tight ball and lets it spring the other ponies up--earth pony, unicorn and pegasus--towards the land in the sky. It was so condensed that anypony could walk on it

one explanation can be that Twi's clud-walking spell lasts forever

FOREVER! they didn't mention the duration

Not really, if she casted it once, she could do it again. If they were going to Wonderbolts Academy in clouds, they must have been prepared to walk on clouds, thats Twilight we talk about goddamit .

Nope.
Physicaly it's correct. Big pressure it's equal to big density. Plus temperature, of course.

It's possible that if the clouds are packed tightly enough, anypony can walk on them, that's the explanation I came up with anyway

Ok two ways to address this first lets assume that Twi casted the cloud walk spell off screne that is one is logical. Second way is look what RD did she gathered metric butt tone of clouds and condense them so well that they were solid like a pillow which allowed the none pegasus to stand on. I believe the most likely one is the casting off screen because we know how OCD Twilight actually is. And if this doesn't work for ya on your left arm is the I believe button press it, this is a cartoon guys granted a very good cartoon, so it is kind of stupid to argue about such little details.

I just figured that Twilight casted the cloud walking spell on them off-screen, like she did in the Sonic Rainboom episode. Figured they thought we could put two and two together without outright telling us.[link]

She gathered a bunch of them and compressed them to be dense enough for earth ponies and unicorns to stand on. Clouds are not this thick by nature, therefore unicorns and earth ponies can't stand on normal clouds.

Seriously people, was it THAT hard to understand? The scene made it very clear what she did.

Well, if the cloud was really able to hold them, then they would have been able to stay on it, and not need to be caught by the other pegasi.

I think dash just did something where she brought all of the clouds together and created a type of upward force, which shot them straight up.

broznik592 In reply to Dread555 [2012-12-16 16:15:03 +0000 UTC]

I figured she just made the cloud much more dense, though I would expect that would just slow them down rather than launch them.

Like someone else said though, it does make sense that Twi would've cast a cloud-walking spell off-screen. She probably expected the entire thing to be in the clouds, rather than that awesome plateau they had.

When I saw that scene, I assumed Rainbow simply turned the cloud into a spring by making it more bouncy. Okay, that doesn't make sense either, but it's a cartoon...

However, if they did get lazy with their research and forget to cast the cloud walking spell, this is what would happen...

Fluttershy was established as losing her ability to fly in a panic in Dragonshy. Writer: Meghan McCarthy.

(It also happened to her in Feeling Pinkie Keen; author Dave Polsky - but I guess he's fashionable to hate as well)

I didnt see any clamped wings there.

Silfir In reply to GermanBeez [2012-12-16 21:03:10 +0000 UTC]

In most of those, it took a serious push to get her to overcome her fears. None of those moments featured being faced with immediate danger to her own self. That she overcame her limitations some times doesn't forever guarantee that she always will.

If you can only see her good moments and ignore her flaws, you're not a FlutterFan at all - you're fan of an image of Fluttershy that she only lives up to some of the times.

It's often said that true courage lies in overcoming your fears - if you don't feel fear, you cannot ever show courage. Fluttershy is perhaps the most courageous pony in the entire show, precisely because she is so easily touched by fear. Often, she overcomes it. Sometimes, she falters. This was one of the times. It doesn't make her any less worthy of admiration.

Signed, a FlutterFan

GermanBeez In reply to Silfir [2012-12-16 21:18:13 +0000 UTC]

hm. I agree with you on the part that she never managed to overcome her fear of flight in danger of herself, that's well-analysed.
But believe me, I do not ignore her flaws- that is why I can relate to her so well most of the time, because i tend to be more of a person who doesn't like to compete in contests, and so on and so forth. sigh...alright, reflecting on what I posted earlier I feel foolish- I guess I am generally unhappy that her character development in Season 2 seemed to be lost in S3. That part with her trying to overcome hher fears has been emphasised close to zero times in S3, and that for one thing upsets me. Well, I guess it just shows the scriptwriters different styles, I guess :/

Silfir In reply to GermanBeez [2012-12-16 21:42:39 +0000 UTC]

There will be a moment in the spotlight for her in season three. (And being Fluttershy, she will really, really, really dislike having to be in the spotlight in the first place.) We all love to see her shine; her heroic moments are always some of my favorite moments in the show ever. (That! Big! Dumb! MEANIE!) I just don't think her less heroic moments do anything to diminish her moments of greatness; if anything, it makes them even greater.

Also, Fluttershy is funny and adorable when she's scared. I wouldn't want to miss that for the world.

Or maybe, just maybe Twilight had already cast the cloud-walking spell?
In sonic rainboom Twilight had already cast the spell wenn they leave the balloon, so maybe this time it was the same?
Just my thoughts about this.

Funny comic

The explanation to draw from the episode is quite clear though; Rainbow Dash simply compresses the clouds to be dense enough for all types of ponies to stand on. The clouds even change colour in the episode as she does it.

This is actually what I expected to happen, too. Reading the comments, the two suggestions that make the most sense to me are that either Rainbow compressed the cloud to the point that it could support non-pegasi, or that Twilight cast the cloudwalking spell prior to leaving Ponyville in anticipation of their destination. The first is probably what they were going for, but doesn't really make much sense both from a purely physical standpoint (compressing the cloud would have made it fall out of the sky long before it became solid enough to support the weight of a pony), and from a canonical standpoint (if there was a way to make clouds walkable on for non-pegasi, don't you think they would have done it? Even Twilight's cloudwalking spell seems a little out of place in that regard).

Then again, maybe this is just more pegasus magic at work. Crafting solid objects out of clouds. Yeah, I could see that. Could be some interesting things you could do with that in world building.
