Description Rainbow Dash must have forgot, In the heat of the moment, that only Pegasus can be on clouds.

Anyway the semester is over and now that I’ve heartily failed my finals I can focus on pony. Well maybe.

no.... twilight planned on going to a building MADE OUT of clouds. she cast the cloud walking spell on her and her friends beforehand.

Yeah, I was thinking this is what should have happened. In answer to the thought that Twilight cast the cloud walking spell, how did Rainbow dash know that? Why would she even assume that? It makes no sense. The others had no communication with her until after the incident was over. I calling BS (Bad Script) writing on the part of Merriwether Williams.

Fluttershy was caught by butterflies after a 500+ meter fall, Twilight was propelled 30+ meters from a bog bubble, and Applejack sent Rainbow Dash flying off her see-saw having only jumped down about a story height.

Makes no sense? How long have you been here?

Although there have been cartoony moments in the show they made it very clear in the episode "sonic rainboom" that the clouds acted differently than other physics in the show. It was inconsistent with the established canon set in earlier episodes which has been a staple for MW in her script writing. It's like a so-so fanfic plot device.

Lol, that is back in the Best Flyers competition episode, or more in your case, the cloud is not dense enough to support their weight.

I can already picture how this bad ending looks like and no need to go into details due to the "Tragic" category.

I wondered this during the actual episode. I figured either Rainbow managed to supercompress them to make them dense enough so as to be effectively solid, or Twilight cast the cloudwalk spell before they left as a safety measure.

ohgawd7 In reply to ??? [2012-12-16 04:49:00 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha! That's what I was thinking at first! But some of the other commenters made a good point. Perhaps Twilight cast a Cloud Walking spell on them before they left? It certainly could work, seeing as she did that off screen for "Sonic Rainboom" as well. Unfortunately, that leaves the idea open that "How did RD know they had a Cloud Walking spell on?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tehwatever In reply to ohgawd7 [2012-12-16 05:22:27 +0000 UTC]

She didn't. She absolutely counted on Twi using the spell. although, had she really failed to catch everypony, Twi would have levitated the whole bunch or teleported all of them to nearby water or something.
either way, with both Twi and RD, two most overpowered normal ponies in recent Equestria, I couldn't see them actually plummeting.

Tehwatever In reply to margarbarbarian [2012-12-16 05:22:48 +0000 UTC]

...nope. cloud walking spell. check Sonic Rainboom if you forgot or haven't watched it already.
Twilight, being the OCD over prepared pony she is, is very unlikely to overlook the most important thing a non-pegasus pony should consider when visiting pegasi places : to be able to walk on clouds.

lacipart In reply to Tehwatever [2012-12-16 06:42:36 +0000 UTC]

Then WTF was the point of Dash working so hard to compress the cloud. It was compressed in size by 4x and even changed color as it was compressed.

Image of cloud being condensed by a crap load: [link]

If they could walk on clouds Dash would just move one cloud under them and they would be it. (In fact compressing the cloud would have been risky because its a smaller target to land on.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tehwatever In reply to lacipart [2012-12-16 07:33:34 +0000 UTC]

contingency plan, in case the cloud isn't dense enough to stop their fall. but she REALLY was counting on that spell. Without the spell, It doesn't matter if the cloud has the density of mercury, it won't stop anypony from falling through it.
but yea even without compressing the cloud she could have caught them all no problem. she probably was just being rainbow dash. you know how she likes to spin around clouds and perform elaborate tricks.
but that's just my opinion.

This is exactly what I thought when I saw them bounce off the cloud. Really, MLP? One of the few bits of lore which you keep fairly constant throughout the series, and you go and let Merriweather Williams destroy it. Ah well, at least we got this great comic out of it.

I dare you to try to bounce off of a condensed cloud of water vapor, regardless of density. It can't be denser than water, which ponies sink in, as Mephitinae said. It's not a huge deal, but it is funny.

>I dare you to try to bounce off of a condensed cloud of water vapor, regardless of density.

ಠ_ಠ
This is the universe where winged horses can walk on clouds, and where clouds don't move on their own. I think these clouds might be special. I assume these are magic clouds which allow pegasi to walk on them because pegasi are lighter, so a dense magic cloud could hold a slightly denser earth pony.

And actually, even if they were normal clouds, if you condensed them enough it would form a pool of water in the air. If the pool of water was being held aloft by Dash, if you fell into the floating pool it would break your fall

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

majicfrog In reply to lacipart [2012-12-17 17:51:42 +0000 UTC]

I always figured cloud-walking was inherent magic. After all, Twilight's cloud-walking spell was magic, not just making ponies lighter. All ponies have their own sort of magic, remember.

Still, I'll yield that physics clearly work differently in Equestria.

And even if it was a pool of water they wouldn't bounce in standard physics world P:

Mephitinae In reply to lacipart [2012-12-16 16:01:05 +0000 UTC]

Congrats, you got the joke. Yes, she condensed the cloud.

But ponies have already been shown sinking in water (which is like 10.000 times denser than any cloud)
