Description
The concept behind this one is that Link doesn’t have enough stamina to carry an extra person on the paraglider, so he shrinks Zelda to carry her more easily. I obviously made the concept before I started working on this, but then I had to plan out how I was going to communicate that Zelda was too heavy to the viewer. I had a few ideas in mind, like having Link try to use the glider with her and they fall down before trying again, or maybe having Link try to pick her up and seem to be really straining himself. Eventually I decided to try and use the stamina wheel as the indicator, and to have Link be exhausted after flying in, then to have Link barely drain any stamina at all once Zelda is shrunken. I think it still doesn’t read perfectly well, but it’s close enough, and the title implying something about weight helps to give the viewer a push in the right direction.
I think this animation takes the record for the fastest time completed for any of my recent works. It only took about 3 days for me to finish, which is blazingly quick compared to pretty much any of my other works, which usually take a week at the very least.
While the animation is pretty simple, there’s a lot of stuff I like quite a bit. Both more action and expression focused stuff. Link’s pose when he lands the first time looks really solid, and the way he jumps off at the end looks good too. And Zelda’s poses when she’s on his back, and when she dismounts look nice.
Then I love the way Link picks up Zelda by her cape. I wasn’t sure if I’d leave the cape in for the final animation, as I imagined it would cause clipping issues, but it behaved surprisingly well. At first I had intended to just have Link pick her up in his hand like normal, but once I thought of having him use the cape, it just seemed like a really fun idea that I haven’t tried too much before.
Zelda is pretty expressive in this animation, which is fun. Both characters have a more playful style going for their actions, which I think fits well. Stuff like how Zelda looks at Link when he shrinks her. Or how she gestures for him to pick her up once she’s shrunken. Or how Link just drops her into his hand after shrinking her again. I really like how all of that came out. Zelda’s standing pose where she has her legs crossed also looks nice. I wanted to try using some more realistic and casual stances, and I think that one came out nicely.
Usually when I have someone carry a shrunken person, I’ll have them be put on the shoulder, as it’s a convenient location, and it looks nice. But here I wasn’t able to do that because of how Link needs to move his shoulders up a lot when he uses the paraglider. Having Zelda hold onto the Zonai Battery is a pretty good spot too. It gives her an interesting pose as she sort of holds onto the side to steady herself, and it looks cool.
I’m quite happy with the voice acting here too. There aren’t very many words, as Link pretty much only has grunts, but the voices are still pretty expressive. Most of Zelda’s lines are from Age of Calamity, not Breath of the Wild, but they still work well. She talks super quickly in a lot of the lines, with a really urgent inflection, but there were also a good amount of normal lines, which I was able to use here. I like the little giggles she has, those are cute. They help to be those sort of space filler lines that don’t really mean a whole lot, but are there to make sure there’s not blank space for too long.
The SFX themselves are pretty good. I think they’re all from BOTW, and I feel like most things that should have SFX have them. The stuff for things like putting out the glider are literally just the SFX for those sounds, which is pretty neat. The noises that I used for shrinking are still a bit questionable, as in I think I could have maybe tried to find a better effect, but they’re not bad.
