I’ll be honest with this one, it took forever to make. Not necessarily because it took a lot of hours, but because I had a really hard time getting the motivation to work on it. Ever since I stopped about halfway through making the Elincia animation (the last one I released), I’ve just been having a really hard time getting into “the zone”, where I could work on animations for long periods of time. Instead I would open Blender, maybe make a single pose, then quit out for the day. I managed to get all the way to when Zelda shrinks just doing that, but then I made a stupid render of Seven from Xenoblade shooting an assault rifle (here’s the link if anyone is curious: youtu.be/Ch25JU4Y9pM ) and it really helped me get back into things and finish out the animation. I wanted to get this out much earlier to capitalize on Tears of the Kingdom, but I suppose it’s still pretty relevant.
Again, no story for this one. As of recently, I feel like unless there’s either some deeper lore/jokes that I want to make clear, or I’m writing just to have fun writing, there’s not a whole lot of reason to write the stories anymore, as I’ve gotten to a point where my animations can speak for themselves. For example, I shouldn’t need to say in the story that Zelda is hungry because she’s carefully watching Link cook, and holds her stomach to show that she’s hungry. Stuff like that.
I’m super happy with Zelda’s facial expressions here. I say facial expressions, but it’s really just 2-3 of them. She’s got her neutral one, which works pretty well in a variety of situations, but then there’s the shocked one that she does right after she shrinks, and the smiling one where she closes her eyes. Both of them look really expressive, and are just fun to look at.
Some of Zelda’s poses here too (especially in the later half of the animation) are also really expressive and fun. My favorite being the way she snaps into that surprised stance in like 3 frames, which makes it feel super active and snappy. The stance itself is inspired by how Link recoils away in surprise as one of his animations in BOTW/TOTK. It plays when he hears/sees something surprising in dialogue. I didn’t create it one for one, but it’s still pretty inspired by it. I also like the way Link and Zelda look at each other here after she shows him the mushroom. It’s like he knows it’s a bad idea but he also knows that Zelda is going to do whatever she wants to.
So while I do like the animation quite a bit, I feel like it’s actually not that great of a shrinking animation, as it takes a massive 45 seconds to actually get to the shrinking part. Sure, some of that is building suspense, but a lot of that time is kind of wasted. Once you do get to the shrinking I think it’s pretty great, but until then I could see it being kind of boring.
And yes, I know there’s technically nothing cooking in the pot. It’s not really supposed to feel like that, I just didn’t want to go through the trouble of adding anything in there.
