Much shorter animation than what I’ve been making for the past few months, but I’m still pretty happy with this one.
The idea is obviously pretty inspired by the mimic chests from games like Dark Souls. Basically trap chests that do something nefarious when opening them.
I was pretty certain that I wanted to make this one Legend of Zelda themed, and I did consider the idea of using a different Zelda/Link, like the Brawl or OOT ones, but I ended up going with the BOTW/TOTK iterations for a couple reasons. Zelda wearing pants is very helpful when she’s going to be doing a lot of crouching, and I wanted to throw in a bunch of silly references to BOTW. Also it helps that they’re easily the most popular version of the two. I still do like the other versions of Zelda though, so next time I’ll try to use a different version for variety.
Speaking of references, they were pretty fun to do. Obviously the way Link opens the chest is a direct parody of how he opens the chests in OOT (I literally watched Youtube videos for reference), and the way he holds Zelda above his head. Then you’ve got how he enters the scene, where you can hear the remote bomb explosion before he slams into the ground at Mach 3, which links back to the Windbomb speedrun trick in BOTW where you can blow yourself up to launch yourself really quickly across the map. And lastly, the way Zelda punches the chest to open it is as close to a 1 to 1 recreation of Link’s same animation from the game.
When Link holds Zelda above his head, I really wanted to make the item acquired box that shows up when you get a new or key item in BOTW, but with the text at the bottom. But it turns out, I’m awful at editing, and could not for the life of me figure out how to do it, lol. I even tried to render the text box as a 3d object in the scene, but it ended up looking really bad. I think it still works at the bottom as a caption, but it would have been way cooler in the actual box.
I’m very, very happy with Link’s entrance though. It looks really fluid how he slams into the ground and gets thrown into the pillar. The sound effects really help too. I wasn’t planning on adding the small amount of blood on the ground at first, but I decided to try it as a joke, and it ended up looking really funny. I love the frame of him just lying on the ground with the bloodstain a couple feet away from him.
And then for Zelda punching the chest, I ended up going frame by frame on a youtube video of Link’s animation for that, and tried to create it as best I could. For those who don’t know, I’m sure you’ve all seen how if Link opens a chest from the side in BOTW, he kicks it to open it. And if he doesn’t have shoes on, he actually hurts his foot, and does a funny little animation. But if you’re crouched and try to open it from the side, Link instead punches the chest, and hurts his hand to open it, which is a really cool detail. I thought it would be a fun way to make Zelda open it up.
Despite this having a significantly smaller scope than my most recent projects, I’m still pretty happy with it. It’s short, but still pretty fun, and although there’s a lot of stuff that definitely could have used more polish, but there’s also some stuff that’s pretty cool.
I’ve actually had this video finished and basically read to post for like 2 weeks now. The reason I waited so long was to hopefully bridge the gap between my next animation a bit better, since it’s possible that it’ll like a month before that one comes out.
