Description

Notes:

Full discloser, this animation wasn’t my idea.  I was having trouble coming up with something new to do, and www.deviantart.com/arnsden helped me out by pitching some of his ideas to me, and this was the one I was most interested in doing.  So huge thanks to him for the help.  (He also is the one who ripped the reception hall model, so thanks for that too.)

This is another one I’m not writing a story for because I feel like it’s somewhat self explanatory.  As in the animation does a good enough job of showing what everyone is thinking.  Really the only story beat that might need to be explained is that they’re cleaning up after a match of Smash Bros.  This environment is Byleth’s map, and these characters, Edelgard, Petra, and Dorothea, sometimes show up in the background.  Although writing dialogue for Petra seems like it could have been fun.

One trend that I’ve been having recently is that it’s taking a long time to actually get to the shrinking part of my shrinking animations.  Of the past 5 animations, 4 of them have taken like 30 seconds for the characters to start shrinking.  I’m trying to cut down on this back to around 15-20 seconds, and the next animation I’m working on should be really quick to start with the shrinking.

I really like the actions everyone does before they shrink.  Petra’s actions clearly got the most attention, as she’s the focus, but it’s a pretty convincing sweeping motion that she does.  And yes, I did have to go find a broom just so that I could make sure I had the motion right. Edelgard pushing the table looks decent from a distance, but falls apart a bit when you look too closely.  But for how little it’s the focus, it looks pretty neat, and helps give her something to do.  Dorothea lifting the chandelier up looks fine, but the way she flips the table around looks really neat.  She wasn’t supposed to do that at first, but I realized that her putting the chandelier up didn’t take very long, and left her standing around for a while, so I wanted to give her something else to do.  Also, fun fact, I couldn’t find a model for the lightning bolt from Smash, so I just used the screw attack, and took off the circle part to just leave the lightning bolt.

The shot where Dorothea looks down at Edelgard came out really well.  I actually had to temporarily remove the floor, as the camera completely clips through it, and I had to widen the field of view for that shot to get Edelgard in frame, but it came out really well.  It does accidently give a pretty clean upskirt of Dorothea, but there’s not much I could have done to avoid it unless I wanted to remake the whole shot.  I did a similar one with Petra later, how I hid the floor again so the camera could clip through it.  Though it might be less obvious since she’s sitting on the broom, not the floor.

One problem with this scene though, I had to change the camera clip distance.  I knew that changing the camera clip distance caused issues, but I couldn’t remember exactly what kind of issues, so I just hoped that they wouldn’t pop up.  Anyways, it completely screwed up how objects close to each other would render, and made stuff like the walls constantly flicker in a super distracting way.  So after I fully rendered the scene, I had to do the whole thing again with the normal clip distance.

The scene where Petra is looking up at Dorothea uses a bit of cheating.  I wanted Dorothea to put her hand low enough for Petra to jump in.  Problem was, I don’t think I could easily make her put her hand that low without clipping her lower body through the floor a lot.  So instead I just made it so you couldn’t see her legs,  which are really badly clipping through the floor for pretty much the entire time they’re out of frame.

Having Lyn in the assist trophy is a detail that I didn’t always think I would be doing.  I grabbed the assist trophy model as one of the items I could have used, but I didn’t plan on putting anything in it at first.  Then I thought it would be fun to put an FE character in it, and I already have Lyn rigged.  She’s not visible for very long, but I think it’s a fun detail nonetheless.
