Description the title may be a bit misleading, in the short time i talked with Manfred i would say he is much more an intellectual, although i believe we will all agree he does the hat justice.
from East Germany to Texas and then up to Canada, at 63 Manfred finds himself in Victoria awaiting a hip operation (ironically enough, he broke his hip when he slipped and fell in a hospital).

contrast tweaked (the smallest bit, darker)

i've always believed human 'landscapes' are the best and richest and diverse ones in that world.

a good portrait (a b&w one, specially) can tell you a lot about life.

great shot, once again, Ken.

very wise words my friend, and i thank you for a great comment.

my only regret is that i could not get the prints to him. i've looked for him for four days... but who knows what the future may hold.
thank you again.

hi tiger-girl, i certainly agree with you and i would add that he is a very down to earth kind of guy, a straight shooter, to use a cowboy term. : )
thanks

wonderful portrait. It is a really honest capture. The bookbag strap is great (I'm in a detail mood...) reminds me that he's still on the journey called life. Deffinitely two thumbs up and a big toe for good measure

How do you do that? How do you get someone to tell you there story, then have it show in the picture? Amazing!

LikeBlue In reply to NM-Raven [2007-10-08 14:54:11 +0000 UTC]

i'm not so certain it's me, quite likely the folks who agree to a photo are also the folks who like to share their personal experiences too?
i thank you raven, very kind of you, and always good to have you visit.

Like skelly said, keep an eye out for highlights, and expose for those areas instead of focusing on his nose or eyes.. focus on the brightest spots and you will get more detail in hightlights.

thanks fox, very good advice and appreciated. i will need to keep up on these things until it becomes second nature and a spontaneous part of the shot. otherwise there's no way i'll remember to do it when i'm all caught up in the viewfinder. thanks for the good suggestion and thank you for the fav.
cheers

The way i always remember is just think (compose, compose, focus) Run those things through your head before you shoot

of course, that makes it too easy, where's the internal panic! lol

The left side is rather blown-out; be careful of your highlights. (They're a real pain in the ass in digital- I always have trouble with that)

Lots of character, he has. Love the ringlets XD It's not every day you see a cowboy from East Germany with ringlets.
Lovely shot! I like the angle and composition.

It's hard not to rush when you're photographing people, especially strangers.

LikeBlue In reply to skeletoninadress [2007-10-07 14:16:11 +0000 UTC]

i agree, you don't want to keep them waiting and miss that moment.

when i got this shot, i was setting up to shoot the building across the street. so, i quickly switched to b&w. i had the white balance adjusted for a slightly cooler tone of green and i believe that lightened the shadows in this b&w shot, and why i adjusted the contrast.
too many things to remember. lol

skeletoninadress In reply to LikeBlue [2007-10-07 18:39:11 +0000 UTC]

lol especially when shooting in digital.
I hate white balance. It's so confusing, especially when you take whole classes on it that go into the kalvin scale and yatta yatta -_-

yeah. it's mind boggling, it's a good thing i'm not being graded on it cause i'm coming along slowly. hot and cold, it's fun to play with it.

i like doing these shots of the street, but every now and then i wish i was shooting video. perhaps in time that will pass but, there sure are some interesting stories out there.
