Description
It’s a quiet Sunday morning in town and I’m standing on the street just down the block from the coffee shop.As I sip slowly on hot coffee, I’m aware of the emptiness of the street and how the people that pass seemed to group together simply because of the traffic lights.
Individuals and pairs gather at the crosswalk waiting for the light, and then travel together as a small loose group that somewhat keeps pace as they head to wherever it is they are going.
There’s a sweet lonesome melody that almost fills the air, sometimes high, at times very low as it ebbs and flows through the traffic.
Mathieu is on the corner a hundred or so meters from where I’m standing. I watch as the crowd passes, some stopping to listen as he plays, others offering words and cash for a job done well. It’s a quiet Sunday morning.
Mathieu is a jazz bassist and hales from Quebec. Having wandering feet he finds himself in Victoria, and picks up a violin.
Working the street is more fun than work he explains.
The piece he’s working on at the moment is from Braveheart he loves the melody.
Missing his family Mathieu will soon be heading home for Christmas.
I hope he has warm memories of Victoria to take with him.

Beautiful! The story you tell of the quiet morning, and this portrait of the violinist (Mathieu, I guess?) compliment each other beautifully. I hope that the music he played was as lovely as the concentration and apparent grace portrayed here make it appear.
I love your portraits, they always manage to capture the individual's personality, rather than fitting snugly into a stereotype.

i thinking it must be something about musicians when they are doing their music, they just seem to relax and let all the natural energy flow.

funny thing about Quebec, Montreal is about half English speaking and where most of the good music comes from...don't even get me started about how different the rest is once you move past Quebec city...

The story with this piece makes the picture absolutely perfect. I love the music from Braveheart... I can almost hear it. He looks so intent on what he is doing. Artists get in an almost trance like state when they are working on something that they love and you can see that in his expression. I love how the focus is on his face.
Very well done.
