Description A few notes.

+ The whole schmeer is inspired by the cover of Ray Lamontagne's Trouble, which is a great album, by the way, and which is why Sarah has no eyes. She's too pretty to blindfold, so I just blinded her. Just for the sake of metaphor, of course.
+ My shadows and shit are all willy-nilly because it's just a sketch and I save the good skills for the final minutes.
+ Jareth's coat is based off that kickass bomb-leather number in roughly the second act of Labyrinth, but I was working from memory and I jacked it all up, and then I decided I didn't care because I like the teeny-weeny bird skull buttons.
+ Yes, he is secreting an apple in his left hand.
+ I'm not making his package any bigger, so QUIT ASKING, JARETH. I don't care how big it is, leave me alone. Crazy goblin.

My sister and I agreed that Jareth reminds us heavily of the devil in our favorite mythology of him–––lonely, angry, arrogant, a bully. When he meets Sarah, who defies and rejects him, he tries to scare and trick her, and then to tempt her with false treasures. He represents every sin and she resists in favor of the best thing in the world: family love. Is Jareth too far gone to have any concept of real love? Does he just want her, like a toy?

Most women, I'm told, imagine the devil as a handsome, charming man. It speaks to our weakness and to our secret belief that we–––that love–––can fix and change anything.

You know, lookin' at this now, I should have given him some horns. I think I will. He would wear them well.

Honestly, I never do a base sketch, and I really should. I used to end up with a lot of proportion problems because I never rough sketched. I'm glad you like this!

THIS is....wow, I lack the words...So simple, with so little colour, but so elegant and SO alike! I really like Jareth's jacket, the way it folds diagonally across his chest. Amazing job, I truly envy you for being such a ridiculously talented artist!

I thought for a moment the title was taken from Flogging Molly's Devil's Dancefloor, but it appears I was wrong. The tune still sticks in my head for this though.

as do I! question: do you think a GND/WCMI crossover would be a good story idea?

lily-fox In reply to tartarus-staff [2011-01-03 15:07:41 +0000 UTC]

I gotta be honest, every time new characters show up in GND I sort of heave a sigh. It's a pretty packed house already, you know? Those girls definitely don't need anymore sullen girls or lunatic romantics!

Dude, no. I totes agree with you.
And I am trying not to be an ungrateful snob and all, and am glad people feel invested and want to trust me with their favourite characters, and the current arc IS a bit special in that regards... BUT... I'm just a tad weary of the "ooh! Ooh! Put **** from **** in next!!" (esp. when that is the only comment people leave on a page) and I uncharitably want to go NO. This is not about hottie fanfavourite characters on parade and every single cool fictional character getting to hang out together. Dangnabbit, I've a J/S ship to steer and several fine female characters to develop.

You're fine and dandy.

I haven't said anything because, obviously, I figure if you're drawing it, that means you like what's going on. And I know you still do, of course, but I've wanted to say... damn, can we let Sarah and Jareth have a strip to themselves? Somebody lock the door and put a spell on that shit so they can sit and watch a flick together or something! I-is that something Jareth would put up with?

You know what I'm sayin'. You know what you should do? You should just go, "Yeah, yeah, great idea" to every comment that suggests you throw in so-and-so, and then just do whatever the fuck you fancy. Because that's why people came to read in the first place!

Pika-la-Cynique In reply to lily-fox [2012-05-24 22:26:47 +0000 UTC]

Sweetcheeks, don't you believe I do much anything else than that.
(with some caving to fads and fanpressure, aye, but not if I don't get some smiles or smirks out of it myself).

And as to Jareth and Sarah... ahahaha. You would not believe how firmly I have to hold on to a "character developments and spotlight moments for EVERYONE" narrative rule because all my natural inclinations is to just ship J/S all over the place, and it is honestly my endgame and what still fuels my need/desire to do the regular comics and to keep that world spinning until they can work it out.

I guess I just mean, like... the stories people pass down. I've got this great children's book called Wicked Jack, about this old man who was so mean even the Devil didn't want him.

Too gay, except for being married to his wife for like twenty years and fathering a child or two. Except for that.

I've just seen The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. There's this scene by the end of the film that IMMEDIATELY made me think of this piece. The drawing and your description just fit so perfectly well with the film, I couldn't believe it. I highly recommend it (though, your Goblin King characterization beats the hell outta any other devil characterization I've seen, it still gives me jitters)

But what attracted my attention was the title. (I saw the movie in German so these words were not in my mind) I first heard them here: [link]

You know, I would *almost* agree with that comparison, were it not for Tim Curry's stunning performance in "Legend".
Fantastic drawing, though, and wonderful symbolism, and you've captured the mischievousness of our favorite King rather beautifully.
