Description
Labyrinth stole the kingdom of my heart, kicked the doors down, slaughtered innocent bystanders and overthrew the monarchy. It was a mess. I'm still recovering.Flagrant abuse of symbolism here, the basic message being that Sarah owns the King's heart, and sometimes she's careless with it. But how could she know? It isn't fair.
The Goblin King had NO intention of letting me draw him. It was a fight, and he was pissed, but I wrestled him down. Next time, I'm sure, won't be any easier.
This is a Christmas present for my Mom, who called dibs on it when she saw the sketch. (Love you, Mom.) But it's dedicated to , whose art (and especially her Labyrinth art) makes my heart puddle.
materials: ink and Letraset illustration marker on bristol
music: BjΓΆrk and Imogen Heap

*sigh*
Trade you.
Gorgeous piece, by the way.

Oh, my God, thank you! I bow to your work.
*heh* I hear the King doesn't like to let you get idle. Or less than frazzled. He thinks I'm amateur. Or maybe he knows that I prefer the gentleman Bowie. You know he hates to be second-best.
I hope he never lets up on you. ^_^

Judging from your work here, I would hardly say amateur.
It's very well drawn and executed. His Royal Vanity would do well to consider commissioning you...
maybe then he'd leave me alone.

What do you like to listen to while you draw? Do you have different soundtracks for various subjects?

if I'm painting his highness... I usually listen to the soundtrack from the movie.
Otherwise, loud rock n' roll most of the time. Sometimes classical. Often... silence. I like to think about stories when I paint.

Wow Lily! I can't believe you keep on doing it. This has to be my favorite of your Bowie pieces. Of course it could have something to do with the fact that Jennifer Connely is in there. I am always so impressed by your eye for composition and your sense of symbolism. All of the surreal and iconic elements in your pieces always make them special and so much more than just a decent rendering of person from photos.

This is, like, a professional-type comment, which I feel totally unworthy of, and thank you. My husband was surprised that I'd drawn Connelly, but I've always wanted to. She's one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen, especially when she was sixteen with a trace of baby blush.
I think you can separate all the drawings in my gallery into art vs. illustration. The art is what says something emotionally, and the illustration is just for fun, just for looks. For a long time I never did art. I wonder what that says about me?

I concur... even though glancing through your gallery again it mostly looks like art to me, but I know what you mean. It actually just depends on your intention and how you felt when you created the piece, I guess.
As for what it says about you... maybe you have just grown emotionally.

Wow.. you really went all out on this! The coloring looks gorgeous.. as does both of the characters hair! It's so.. fwoooshyyysysyss. Haha.
Poor Jareth, .. those 15 year olds can be such heartbreakers Lol.
I think you did an amazing job with this! <3
(And, yea, I've seen :iconpika-la-clinque:'s art and read her fanfic.. haha, woooaah!)

Come to think of it, the writers of Labyrinth managed to walk the tightrope of a romantic story between an ageless but obviously grown man and a young girl. They didn't cross any lines, but they made us want them to be crossed. Me, anyway. Just wee little lines. ^_^ Kissin' lines.

LilLyon In reply to lily-fox [2007-12-26 20:29:14 +0000 UTC]
I never could really notice the romance in it as a kid, but it's very obviously there. But, then again, how can one be in love with a figmant of their imagination? Lol. I guess it's probably best that Sarah learns to grow up a little.
But when Jareth flies away as the owl at the end.... it makes me wonder about how real it is. Hmmmmm...
Anyways, the "When the World Falls Down" scene makes me melt every time.

lily-fox In reply to LilLyon [2007-12-26 21:26:08 +0000 UTC]
I always thought of Jareth as being like the Devil; lonely, angry, arrogant, a bully. Surrounded by his demons and goblins who don't like him but fear and obey him. When confronted by someone that rejects him (Sarah), he tries to persuade her using the temptation of material, false things. Look at what you can have, look what I can make for you. Just do what I say. Just love me.

lily-fox In reply to LilLyon [2007-12-26 23:50:35 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I think so. I don't actually believe in the devil, but I like the mythology. The devil would have to be charming, sort of a fallen romantic hero, or resisting his temptation wouldn't be such a moral victory, right?

LilLyon In reply to lily-fox [2007-12-26 23:54:51 +0000 UTC]
Makes sense to me. I'm not religious, therefore, I also don't believe in the devil, but.. mythology-wise, it makes a lot of sense.
Omg, so my Mom got me my first David Bowie CD for Christmas (The Best of Bowie), as well as a 25 dollar iTunes gift card, so I'm craefully choosing which songs I want to buy now. You wouldn't believe it.. I'm like, comiling a list on Word of the songs I have, the songs I want, and the songs that exist and in which album, and in order of what I want more.... ahahahhaa. x) *is a loser*

lily-fox In reply to LilLyon [2007-12-27 09:18:49 +0000 UTC]
You're not a loser! That's awesome! I had a very Bowie Christmas, too; my husband got me a big fat 3-CD collection and the Best of Bowie DVD, and my father got me The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and a motherfuckin' Bowie LEXICON. Which sounds like it might be dull, but is actually pretty fascinating. My mom opened it and was like, "There are no pictures at all! What kind of David Bowie book is this?" ;D
You ought to make me a list of songs you like the best. I always like to hear people's favorites.

How in the world did you manage to get David's hair so perfect? (I have trouble with hair. That's why I ask.)

Grazie! I was sort of worried about Sarah's face. The sketch looks better than the color. I keep wanting to go back and darken up this or that, but the paper reached maximum marker-juice occupancy...
His hair? Oh man, I just went to town with my markers. They're a godsend. They blend just right for hair. Anything else, they could be better, but hair? Forget about it!

Zomg zomg zomg. *coherence is lost*
THANK you for the 'dedication' and also for putting in words quite wonderfully the way I feel about that movie, also. The whole 'leaving your mindscapes in ruins' and wondering why the hell this so-called kids movie with Muppets and an aging rock star inna wig has ... turned your world upside down, etc etc, and left feather and glitter and all sorts of heartache and odd inspirations in its wake.
I love the symbolism you used here, especially perhaps because I couldn't quite make out it was a heart at first and its position and likeness to a cravat makes for a wonderfully tight composition. I like how the tangledness can sort of work both ways, also, and Sarah looks a bit more worried and freaked than confident and aware of her power (and he isn't looking all desperately emo, thank the heavens...) Though I guess depicting an actual anatomically correct heart throws me for a loop ever so slightly.
But you did a fine job wrestling His Nibs to paper. And feathers and glitter, angst and Imogen Heap, and prideful Goblin Kings are a combination that will always be utter win and a passionate fave from me.
Thank you! And Merry Christmas yerself.

*^_^* My very sincere pleasure, all round. And Merry Christmas to you, Pika.
I totally didn't think about the heart looking like an ascot, but it does! Woe! ;D That's the second time I've drawn a human heart sort of creeping out from the breast of a coat, and I always put them too high because of space issues. Perhaps if I'd made it gooier or wrapped it in yellowy fat it would be more immediately recognizable as an organ, but that would just be gross. Not that the King is above grossing you out...
I was delighted to see that you liked to pair them up with Imogen Heap, too. Her voice is perfectly magical and longing, like half in another plane. Awfully fitting. BjΓΆrk and a little Massive Attack will do in a pinch. What else do you like to put to their soundtrack?
In all these years and years of being in love with this flick, I've never wanted to go near doing fan art for it because I didn't have the confidence. I knew it wouldn't turn out the way I wanted, which would be such an aching disappointment. God, it feels good to get it out. I hope I can do more. I aspire to be like you, in color and form.
I'm so glad you like this. Feels good to have a comrade on what a battlefield this story makes your heart out to be.
