Many of Mystery are the legends of the Elias. The once Master Race of the Prehistoric earth now reduced to three; Mothra's Shobijin and their rogue sister Balvera.
The Shobijin, Mona and Laura speak of the sentience of Mothra as if the Monster God was the same being throughout Generations. Yet throughout the years there is explicit evidence that Mothra does give birth to the next Mothra.
However, it was soon noticed that the Egg of Mothra only hatches AFTER the Mother's death. Study on this is greatly shown having witnessing Mothra's birth cycle. It is discovered that Mothra does not exactly lay the egg in question. What she does is that she transfers her own energy into one area, where it collects and assumes the physical form of an eggshell. This has speculated that when Mothra does lay an egg, she transfers her own soul into her offspring. Once the mother dies, her full spirit and knowledge goes into the child, passing the torch to the next creature.
This has resulted in the discovery that all Mothra's are clones of the original...and all are female. However there are some cases when more power is needed. In the case of Mothra's first encounter with Godzilla, two larvae hatched from a single egg. One of the twins was indeed a male Mothra. It was created from the Earth transferring energy to the mother to stop Godzilla. When she fell and transferred her soul into the egg, it took the form of a rage filled larvae. Once Godzilla was defeated, the balance had to be restored, and the boy Mothra died, leaving his sister to take the throne.
Anomalies like this are not common but not unheard of. But there are indeed no possibilities of a male Mothra being born as of procreation of a reincarnation of his mother...that is where the Black Mothra came in. Battra was created by the anger and fear of the Earth in the form of a super Moth more powerful than Mothra. However, as Mothra and Battra are Yin and Yang forces of each other, the is indeed no biological relations between them.
Now in Battra's reawakening on the Earth, he and Mothra finally settled their differences to quell the angered spirit of Godzilla. Battra had been asleep since his first quarrel with Mothra 12000 years ago. He had never had the need for a reincarnation, so he simply developed his powers over the years. He found a way to 'evolve' past the need to cocoon himself to assume full form. He learned the ability to transform his body into pure energy and take whatever form he chose in his life...and even in his death.
While Godzilla tore his neck open, Battra aided by Mothra carried him to the sea. Battra knew that he was not long for this world and that he would soon be gone. But Battra was not one to easily be destroyed and he was not ready to leave this Earth just yet. At that moment, he transferred some of his energy including his remaining life force into Mothra.
Years after Mothra had stopped the Meteorite from destroying the Earth, it was time for the Reincarnation to begin again. Mothra...not long for the earth, laid her egg by transferring her energy. But unbeknown to her, Battra's energy that had laid dormant inside of her all of this time suddenly sprang forth and was transferred to the egg along with hers. The two energies mixed together to form a new genetic code for the baby larva. Mothra had no idea that the creature inside wasn't her reincarnation, but something so much more!
When Death Ghidorah was freed and Mothra was called into battle, the God had no chance against the King of Terror's pawn. But soon the larva in the egg awakened and hatched to help its mother. It was quite the anomaly for Mothra was still alive when the child was born. It arrived to help her fight. There was something different about this child. Its skin was darker, its eyes were glowing, and its web silk was strung with energy almost as if it were a beam attack. And though seemingly helpless as any larva in battle at first, the baby did something unexpected. It shot an energy beam from its underbelly.
Mother and Child couldn't stop the creature, so after tricking Death Ghidorah to destroy a dam, Mothra carried her child to the sea. But Mothra was weakened and dying and fell to the ocean. While trying to fight to stay up, Mothra learned how different her child was from the others. It was indeed a Male Mothra. Though the baby did hatch prematurely and would die soon. So Mothra told her son to go to an island where the 1000 year old tree waited to bestow great power upon the larva. Then as the last strength left the great moth, she knew that this would be the last of the original monster god. Her last breath left saying to her son, "My little Leo." And with that, Mothra succumbed to the waves and drowned in the sea.
The baby quickly went to the island and formed his cocoon around the tree. The life force of the 1000 year old tree was generously offered to the infant monster. Inside, a transformation unlike any other was taking place. The Shobijin waited expecting to see Mothra once again break from the cocoon. However, what they saw was unexpected indeed!
Breaking from the cocoon was not Mothra, but thousands of tiny Mothras created from pure energy. They had only seen a creature do this once before. It was a technique similar to Battra's ability to transform into energy. Finally, Laura and Mona understood. This new Mothra was the son of Mothra and Battra! The two opposing forces combined to create one unstoppable monster! Finally the prophecy had been fulfilled and Light and Shadow combined! The tiny Moths flew together and conjoined until they took the form of the full grown, all mighty, Mothra Leo!

I am happy to know that I am not the only one who thinks Battra is Mothra Leo's father. They actually show some traits.

Well then that was a very stupid thing to do now wasn't it? Cause if it is the comment that I think it is, it explicitly states that I HATE being called that.

I don't need to explain myself to you. I also think it would be best if you cease using my sprites.

yep. the only male mothra... who would go on to become quite the powerhouse. I think very few kaiju (or even sentai superheroes) have gotten as powerful as he did.
Though the trilogy was not my usual cup of tea.

god dammit... hit the wrong button. >.<
But this is a cool sprite edit.
He'd make for one damn hard fighting game character though, because you'd have to include his 101 alternate/more powerful forms at some point in his move-list. o_o;;

Yeah, I recently watched the first of the trilogy while making this and I couldn't believe how many powers he had.
I think that if I were to make a sprite sheet of this beast, he wouldn't have a single physical attack. All of them would be energy based.
