Description
Another older oil painting. This one was done 2001-2002? The fox was a stuffed fox in a painting class I was having with Maureen Graves, a skilled portrait artist near where I live. But, as I get bored easily, I snuck the fairy in there, to the confusion of the other studentsRelated content

I love how you showed a relationship between the faery and the fox. It's almost as though have some secret that us humans know nothing about.

Definitely awesome picture! Lights and shades are skilfully made and the feeling is at the same time realistic and dreamlike. Special mention about details, great work! ^^

Man, I used to get in soooo much trouble for sneaking fantasy stuff into my pics at school... *sigh* My art teacher made art my nemesis... We've had a rather shaky truce for a while, but we do tend to avoid each other!! (Apart from here... It's tough being addicted to your nemesis... But I just love looking at art so much...

I guess not, but by the time you actually get to that stage your mind isn't so young and impressionable... I hope!!

True! There is a certain separation that happens. When it is painted for a commission, then it's completely different from those things that you paint from your heart. Those from your heart are as though you have placed yourself on the canvas for the whole world to criticize. Some people will like you and your art, and some won't and even the tough hearts at times are tender to that.
As for being taught art, it is one thing to be taught technique and skills to be critiqued. What squashes artistic inclination is the criticism of your vision. That is all your own... and that was probably much more than needed to be said

I just think it's wrong for an art teacher to criticize an art student for their style in a school... It wasn't like the teachers were teaching us any specific style so it wasn't like we were doing anything wrong as such, it was just our style was different to theirs and therefore wrong. With the number of different styles of art in the world you would think someone who professes to teach art would be a little more open minded!! I think the thing that bugged me the most was she was always telling me not to use photographic references and yet there was a guy inmy class who was blatantly copying Escher pictures and flogging them off as his wonderful artistic vision... (The teacher wouldn't have known Escher from a log of wood, so had no idea and definitely did not like being told!!!)
OK... Rant over!

*chuckles* Yeah that would be very frustrating! I used to be told that using photos for reference was cheating, but then I found out that most professionals do, and then life became much easier.

Mmmm... Idon't see how using a photo for a refrence is cheating, although I've noticed that most crappy artists who do everything from scratch and think they're wonderful for it say that!!! Our teacher used to try and sell her lino prints of birds... To her that was real art... *sigh* I honestly don't think she sold many!!

*chuckles* I guess like you said it's a preference, and I whole heartedly agree that someone should not force their preferences upon you... unless you have ample monetary compensation for it!

I had a friend with a saying that I'm not sure I completely agree with but think is funny none the less. "Anything worth doing is worth doing for money"

Thanks Maureen was a good teacher. She was helpful without stomping out personal expression. I mean no one else in the class saw the fairy
