Description
Archer knelt down, looking at the marks on the ground before him. Behind him he could hear his brother, Bullet, snort impatiently.
"What is it, Archer?" Bullet asked.
For a moment Archer didn't reply, and Bullet snorted again. Slowly Archer stood up and turned around, facing his brother. Bullet raised an eyebrow.
"Ambush, up ahead," Archer said, his voice so low that only Bullet could hear.
Bullet frowned.
"You sure?"
Archer nodded, readying his blowpipe.
"The path narrows to a choke point," he told the 10th's CO. "Dense foliage too. It's the perfect location. At least, it's where I would set up an ambush."
Archer turned around, looking back down the path. He loosened his shoulders by shaking his arms, using the movement to mask the fact he was pointing out the marks on the ground.
"Look down, Bullet. Someone's been this way recently. Covered their tracks. But the marks stop just where the path narrows, indicating they moved off to the sides. Whoever passed this way is there, waiting for us."
Bullet nodded slightly.
"You take left, I take right. On the count of three..."
The brothers started forward again, acting 'casual'. Under his breath, Bullet counted.
"One... Two... THREE!"
Archer and Bullet jumped into action, striking out as figures burst from the underbrush. Archer fired his blowpipe, hitting Deimos who staggered and dropped, slipping into unconsciousness from the sleeping drug laced darts. On his side, Bullet fired, the taser he held lighting up and shocking Kiara-Ne. The 14th's Captain stumbled but tried to fight on, sparks arcing across her body. She raised her arm, intending to hit Bullet with the shock-prod, only to fall short, collapsing to the dirt. Bullet laughed. From around them a siren buzzed and the training drill ended. Medics came in and dragged of Deimos, taking him to the infirmary to rest up, while Bullet helped Kiara-Ne to her feet. The Captain's pride was hurt more than her body.
"Congratulations, Lieutenant," Kiara-Ne said tersely. "But next time will be different."
Bullet chuckled.
"Cry me a river, Kiara," he taunted. "Just because we won and you now have to buy the drinks tonight at the Officer's Club."
Kiara-Ne grumbled and walked off, leaving Bullet alone with Archer. The older echidna looked at his brother before nodding ever so slightly in praise at a job well done. It was a rare gesture, and one Archer didn't expect. He smiled to himself as Bullet left. They were brothers, however they had never really been close. But seeing Bullet's nod perhaps the older echidna did see value in him after all...
