I think it might be due to mario being in a broader range of media, and therefore more exposure

I'm glad you like it.

I'm not sure why that is. I guess it's because Mario seems to be everywhere (And so people have more chance of knowing/recognizing him), where as a lot of people wouldn't know who Krypto is (Unless they were into comics)
