Description
In Macross, the Tomahawk shares it's legs with the Defender. In BattleTech that's the Warhammer and Rifleman respectively.Since this is generally an anti-aircraft build, I turned the Defender's ammo packs into AEGIS styled arrays. On the BattleTech TRO: Project Phoenix version, that area had become mounts for the radar blades on the top. While building this model, I tried several variations of the radar dome. During the build, I started with an AWACS, then tried an arrowhead shape, and a few other ideas. Lastly, I had a bit of inspiration and instead of the boomerang radar or the AWACS dome, I thought, "How about the Longbow?"
As in Apache Longbow.
As I continued the build, like my Warhammer model, [link] I tried to blend the looks and key features of both the Macross Defender and the BattleTech Rifleman to make a new and fitting design.

I love the design and was worked it into this photomanipulation...
Hope you like it!

First of all, just loving the cockpit. It feels a bit retro, but I dig and it's definitely suitable for an AA 'mech. Body redesign also turned out nicely, really like the arms. Legs are kinda chunky but they work. The only part I disagree with is the radar. To me a rifleman always needed something large up on top. I adore the AEGIS arrays.

The radar dome was the hardest part for me to narrow down. I originally started with an AWACS dome but it seemed too big for the design. I also tried out the boomerang shape from the Defender Destroid (unseen Rifleman) but figured it would be best if I could move away from the Macross design as much as possible. I even tried the antenna look of the Jaegermech. But it didn't seem to fit the overall design. So after trying a number of radar arrays, I narrowed it down to the Longbow. Since the Aegis are good for detecting aircraft and other airborne threats, the Longbow style dome would be good for locating ground units as the real assembly is used in targeting tanks and other ground units.
If I weren't moving away from the Harmony Gold licensed material so much, I'd have probably gone with the boomerang radar antenna. The rest of the design was all about blending the Destroid and the BattleMech to make a compatible and recognizable redesign overall.
I'm glad you've enjoyed the model itself. I wasn't even sure if I were going to build it after completing the Warhammer redesign [link] But since the two share the same legs, half of the work was already completed! All I needed was a spark of inspiration and in the end, this was the result.

Yeah, that harmony gold bit it going to be a constant thorn, it seems. I really think that they should just stick with Project Phoenix, consider it a retcon and move forward. Meh?
Anyway, as always, I enjoyed the stuff. Looking forward to whatever comes next.

I wasn't too sure about the dome cockpit at first, but it makes perfect sense for an AA-focused mech. And the longbow radar? A stroke of genius. This is definitely a mech that looks like it gets the job done.
Specific things aside, I love the amount of detail you put into your models.
Well done!
P.S.: Out of curiosity - how many hours did this one take?

Um... Not nearly as long as the Warhammer. I had a general idea of where I wanted to go with this one, and I was able to reuse a lot of parts. The more time consuming part was actually deciding on the shape of the torso. I'll combine all of my preview renders into a super mega build progression image like some of my other recent builds.
If I had to give a guess, I'd say about a week's worth of work off and on.
