Love the simplicity of this design.  It may be my first knife project.

Could be something like this done in "home environment", without any proffessional tools?

considering the only power tool used was a hand held drill motor, yeah i'd say so.  however my advice is don't go from 36 grit clear to 120.  that's just insanity!  it's more efficient to start with 36, then progress to 60, 80, 100 THEN 120.  from there go to 220. really, if you're doing the stonewashed finish, anything above 120 is a waste of effort since it's gonna get bashed up by the rocks anyway.  but anyroad, skipping grit size as fast as he says just makes more work and you end up wearing out more paper since it takes longer for each progressive grit to polish out the scratches from the previous grit.  in other words, it removes the metal slower than the last.  don't just travel in a single direction with each grit either.  a good hand rubbed finish needs to be done at an angle from the last grit so you can see when all the scratches from the previous grit have been polished out.  another tip is to get wet/dry auto body paper.  it lasts longer and the bonding matrix holds up better to the oil than standard dry use paper.  also, for a knife of such small mass, two cycles of 30 min in the oven is MORE than sufficient soak for tempering.  any more than that and you're just needlessly running up your utility bill.  especially considering the bog standard american toaster oven pulls 1500 watts!

Would the acid etch process work with stainless? Or would stainless steel's corrosion resistance make it impossible?

depends on the alloy, but in general you'd be wasting your time.

Brilliant, thanks for this tutorial which must have taken almost as long to prepare as the knife.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Logan-Pearce In reply to SpinnerOfYarns [2014-04-14 06:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Longer! lol. I forgot how much longer it takes to stop and take a picture and video every other minute. The longest part it putting it all together and writing everything down. It's worth it in the end though!

The filing/sanding looks like it takes a lot of time. Did you just use hand tools for the purpose of this tutorial, or do you not use power tools in general? How long do you think it would take with, say, a bench grinder?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Logan-Pearce In reply to AmpOwl [2014-04-02 05:11:43 +0000 UTC]

With a bench grinder it would cut the time down about 8 hours. This is a small blade. It still took around an hour to file down each side. Then a multitude hours to hand sand up to 320. With a bench grinder (depending on which one you have) grinding up to 320 grit shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to an hour. You would still need to do hand sanding once there, but the time it takes to clean up and everything else would be drastically decreased.

Thank you! I had forgotten how much time and effort it took to make them. My next ones will be on making a wooden forge, tongs, and anvil options before jumping into bladesmithing. That way everyone will have an idea of what they need to try it out.

I think it will be fun! My forge is almost completed, so hopefully I will have that posted in the next week.

Never made a knife before. Made plenty of other, simple weapons. Most of them out of wood, or whatever was available. But I do love knives. Always thought it would be interesting to try making one.
