Gohan sees it's pointless to fight the androids in his current state, he knows it's a matter of time before he loses an arm [wink, wink] or something, or even worse, dies. Gohan reflects on the matter "my obsession blinded me, the body needs time to rest in order to get stronger, I need time… but time is the thing I have the least" pausing for a second, smirking and continuing "Mr. Piccolo would've said I forgot the basics, I can't let anyone down anymore, I'll make them all proud"; He is dead set; he needs to get stronger and mainly, smarter, we then see he is talking to Master Roshi at his house (one of the few times Roshi would go out of the submarine to gather resources), Roshi says "you've come a long way, Gohan, now I see why your father had so much faith in you, here, go to this location, maybe you'll find what you looking for".

(Cue Cha-La Head-Cha-La)

Gohan arrived at the destination, it's the lookout, Gohan is shocked that the androids didn't find this place, but then again, probably the only people that knew about this place were Goku and his friends. Gohan finds Mr. Popo inside and asks for a way to defeat the androids, Mr. Popo sees the determination in Gohan and shows him the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, explaining a day here is equal to a year inside, and that two people can go at a time. Gohan decides to train Trunks inside the time chamber, he asks Bulma to come as she will be safer at the lookout. Bulma refuses, saying she needs to work on the time machine. Inside the Room of Spirit and Time, Gohan and Trunks manage to reach Super Saiyan Second Grade.
[just three things to keep in mind
1) powerscaling (though I'd advise you to don't focus too much on it) Super Vegeta (aka Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Second Grade) was way stronger than Semi-Perfect Cell, so I believe they can manage the androids, even though Trunks said the Future Androids were stronger than the present ones;
2) I feel like people don’t talk enough about the CRAZY potential Trunks has, most of the time we focus on Gohan and Broly’s, in the future timeline Gohan trained/fought the androids since everybody died when he was a kid until he died as an adult, in the special Trunks closes this gap in just three years, when he exit the Time Chamber for the first time, Vegeta himself remarks Trunks is almost as powerful as him, which people debate ‘till this day the possibility Trunks was even stronger than Vegeta; and Trunks stated he had a tough time since Vegeta didn’t train with him, as we know, in DB people get stronger faster by training with another person, so imagine Gohan and Trunks training together with time to breathe, which leads to number 3;
3) Resting - I guess you can explain why Future Gohan is so weak in the special by using this, you can inform yourself with more details on the matter, but basically, our muscles need resting in order to grow, my trainer always told me since day one to get good night’s sleep, “your body grows when you are sleeping, not at the gym”, we assume Gohan fought non-stop all these years, putting an incredible amount of stress on his body, which stopped him from reaching his potential, that’s why I’m using the Time Chamber in this what-if, so they can train, but also rest.

Just as Bulma left for the lookout a special broadcast started playing on all radios and TVs: "Ladies and gentleman, I know you are afraid, I know you are hopeless, but those things are in the past now, our savior has returned, after years missing, the last winner of the world martial arts tournament has returned MR SATAAAAAN!"

Mr Satan finally appears after years hidden, I mean, going through a special training, he is now strong enough to take on these androids "they are just kids, sometimes kids need a firm hand". Mr. Satan, two cameramen and a reporter went after the androids, they weren't hard to find, especially due to their almost daily havoc. Bulma arrived at the lookout just as Gohan and Trunks exited the time chamber, she had prepared special suits for them to wear (similar to the ones she gave Trunks and Vegeta in the other timeline). They were primed and ready heading off looking for the androids.

After stopping by a nearby city, they saw on the TV the reporter saying they've finally arrived in Orange City where Mr Satan will destroy the Androids.
Mr Satan started talking trash to the androids "hey, you punks, I'm here to finally end your reign of terror, start crying for mommy, it won't do you any good". Gohan couldn’t believe it, "Is this guy crazy? He's gonna get himself killed". Trunks then said "we are not too far from Orange City, let's go".
Android 17 remarked that Mr. Satan was the most annoying person he ever met, and that he was gonna kill him now, Mr. Satan started to roll on the ground, calling time out as he was having a serious stomachache (it's a lie lol). Android 17 smirks and call him pathetic, he fires at Mr. Satan and the reporters. When the dust settles down, they were saved by Trunks and Gohan, they put the reporters and Mr. Satan down and somewhat far off the battlefield, just enough so they can kinda see what's going on. "So, you've finally come to die?" Says 18.
"No, we are here to finally put an end to this", just the output of Trunks powering up is enough to fry all the nearby cameras and force Mr. Satan and the reporters to hold anything that can stop them from flying away. When asked about it, Mr. Satan claimed it was all a trick using magnets and some big fans, he will teach them how to do it later.

Gohan attacks 17 still in base, he is just having fun right now (remember, Gohan easily gets cocky and tends to get overconfident and play with adversaries). "I'm going to make you pay for everyone you killed" screams Gohan. 18 is so shocked she can't even move, she notices Trunks didn't even got involved, he is just standing there, arms crossed.

After a massive one-sided fight Gohan powers up to ssj grade 2 "this is for everyone, Tien, Vegeta, Krillin, and especially... Mr. Piccolo", Gohan puts two fingers on his forehead and shouts "makankosappo!", the attack pierce through 17's chest, launching him at a building, which later explodes. "Well, guess that's that. I'm sorry but I don't play around like my master" Trunks is behind 18 in a blink of an eye, when she turns, Trunks simply outputs so much energy, he lets it out, all his rage, all of his frustration, all of his grief, for a brief moment becoming super saiyan, with some electricity around him (ssj2, maybe?) The explosion surrounds the area, 18 vanishes, and Trunks is passed out on the ground. The fight was a catharsis to both Gohan and Trunks, he takes Trunks and leaves.

In the rubble Mr. Satan is the first to get up, he can't believe everyone vanished, he then makes a hero pose with one arm up, just when the reporters manage to finally see anything and ask Mr Satan what happened, informing him they managed to restore audio and everyone is listening. Mr Satan says he got sick of all of the lights and fans, he showed those 4 punks a tiny bit of his power, and after they all bow down to him, he let the blue guys go because they didn't do anything wrong, he said the blue ones even asked to become his students, he will give them a call another time.
"What about the evil androids?" asked a reporter.
"What else do you think, Gary?". The reporter tried in a lower tone to correct him "L--Larry", Mr Satan didn't listen, continuing "I destroyed them using the shock waves just by clapping my hands, how do you think these buildings were destroyed? Maybe I shouldn't have used so much power”. The reporters became extasiated "there you have it folks, Mr. Satan saved us all". While everybody cheers up, Mr. Satan can't believe those guys exist, he just hopes to never see them again.

Trunks finally wakes up on the lookout, where Gohan, Mr. Popo and Bulma were waiting for him to wake up, they start to celebrate their victory when they were abruptly interrupted, a familiar voice spoke "You did great, Gohan'', Gohan asked "father?", the voice continued "you have no idea how proud I am, my son, there were so many times I wanted to talk, to guide you, to intervene, but the world of the living are for the living to protect" (Goku is speaking through King Kai), Gohan started to cry (so did Bulma) and shout "father, tell me where I can find new Namek, I can wish you back, I'll do anythin…" but Goku interrupted Gohan "NO! My time has ended years ago, now it's up to you and Trunks". Gohan fell on his knees, he was so exhausted, he could only mutter "I know… I just, I just miss everyone so much", Goku responded "I miss you too my son, but remember, I always watched over you, and I always will. I have never abandoned you, now rise MY SON". Gohan stood on his feet once again, tears in his eyes, he said "goodbye, father", which Goku simply nodded back, now turning to Trunks, more motivated "we will get even stronger, Trunks" Trunks agreed with a big smile. “You saiyans don’t change, only think about fighting, well, I have a time machine to finish” says Bulma, to which Trunks tries to question “but mom, we destroyed the androids'', which Bulma replied “I’m gonna finish it either way, who's to say something worse won’t show up”. Gohan simply watches, smiling at Trunks with a thumbs up (similar to Goku at the end of the Buu saga).
