Caribbean Pulse caribbeanpulse.deviantart.com is an old friend I used to hang out with online when I was a kid. I had been wanting to try out some new (for me) digital painting techniques when I ran across her deviantArt page, and decided her avatar/character of choice would be a nice challenge -- especially as I am not wild about her preferred color scheme, and I wanted to see if I could harmonize it while staying true to the source material.Using a blue background puts the red shirt and yellow face on either side of the background's complement, making this a tri-something or another scheme. Viola: the character's colors are in harmony.

Silverbat, I'm just now seeing this and I'm so sorry for not replying sooner. I have not been visiting DA often. This gesture means a -lot- to me. It amuses me how candid you are about not liking Summer's colors, and I appreciate your effort to make them less jarring. I love the painterly qualities, the mellowed-out colors, her gentle expression and the spark of life in her eyes. I don't know if you intended it, but this has a stormy, "gloomy" quality to it that I really respond to emotionally. For somecalled called "Summer," I can be very melancholy. But it's not gloom without hope.

The picture I used as reference said "approachable, but a little sad and self-conscious". I don't think I actually managed to convey all of that, but it looks like the result has good qualities of its own.
I am fond of chiaroscuro: the use of intense contrast between light and dark. I think it touches on the deepest, most intense emotions. Like, oh, say, a world of gloom pierced by a ray of hope.
