Description An illustration from the captive project. check out a second here - [link] - and third here - [link] .

Here's what I worked on for most of October/November - animation sequences for Bearkatt Productions , who made a Channel 4 (U.K) documentary about Tanya Kach's life (warning: the documentary deals with very shocking subject matter). 14-year-old Tanya Kach was held captive by an older man, phsyically as well as emotionally, for 10 years of her life - a truly heartbreaking story. The animations were intended to illustrate her emotions when she met her captor at a young age. She rationalized the situation by believing that she was in love and had found someone to take care of her for the rest of her life, something she longed for as a result of not feeling loved or wanted anywhere else. Of course, this was far from the truth.

The animation sequences are basically romantic fairy tale scenes with a 'dark' edge, showing a princess falling in love with her prince. They were edited into the interviews that were conducted with Tanya. What you see above is some artwork which was integrated into the final sequences, to which my awesome boyfriend Arjen Klaverstijn contributed animation and effects.

That story reminds me of what happened to Jaycee Duggard here in the U.S. She was kidnapped when she was 11 by a 50-something year old man and his wife. Not only was she rescued EIGHTEEN years later, but her two daughters that she had for the guy were rescued as well. She actually wrote a memoir called A Stolen Life and I read it last year. The details she gave in the book were so horrific and graphic, but I admire her so much for stepping forward and telling her story to try and help victims of sexual abuse.

As for the artwork, it's beautiful! I love the textured strokes and the mood set with the dramatic lighting!

yeah, i've heard of Jaycee Lee Dugard! she is indeed very brave. not only is it really painful for these people to re-live their memories publicly but they also get a lot of backlash and judgement for it, which must be very hard for them. yet it is really important to speak out on these issues, so i have a lot of admiration for both Jaycee and Tanya!
thanks for the comment!

Not a problem! Yeah and not to mention that she's been trying to keep the media away from her daughters. They're innocent in this too.

Kudos for tackling some really deep subject matter and executing it with all the beauty and flair of your other illustrations. The premise makes me really sad but the colors remind me of medieval pastoral paintings, it's really pretty.

Beautiful I love the emotion and this TRUE story. Poor Tanya, she just wanted to be loved. And an old man fucking takes her for captive for TEN years? No, that's just not right.

The beauty between your lovely illustrations and the dark subject matter is just chilling. It's amazing the coping mechanisms that can be invented by the human mind to survive such trauma. There's definitely something off, something more sinister, in the way you portrayed his much darker countenance and the dark woods.

i really did enjoy it, although it was a bit tough since it was essentially about someone else's suffering. i did enjoy going into the disney style more than i usually do though!

Stuckinafantasy In reply to loish [2012-12-04 15:43:52 +0000 UTC]

Of course it would be a little tough knowing what someone else has been through and then having to draw a picture to represent that. It's a lot of pressure to get it right. But i think the style really works with the feel of the programm! you've done a really well :3

Oh god I saw this documentary, I thought your illustrations were beautiful at showing Tanya Kach's fantasy of prince charming and what she thought she was getting. It’s just so sad that what she got in reality though was both dark and disturbing on many levels.

yeah, that's a lovely phenomenon called 'victim blaming.' happens far too often in my opinion.

Silvermoonlight In reply to loish [2012-12-03 22:18:16 +0000 UTC]

I agree and I hope one day that that changes for good. Because anyone who blames a vitim really needs to take a good long look at themselves in the mirror.

ashren In reply to Silvermoonlight [2012-12-04 00:14:31 +0000 UTC]

I watched it too and I think that - though of course she was exploited by her captor - she was also exploited by her attourney who wrote that book about her. I think it's always very suspect when someone looks at a situation like this and tries to use it to make money - and then when Tanya's dad sued him and Tanya, the attourney was happy to completely throw Tanya under the bus. In some ways that is even more sinister - I mean, her captor obviously knew what he was doing was wrong as he tried to conceal his actions, but Tanya's attourney knew how to exploit her while staying within the law, and he's just going to move straight on to his next victim (he said so himself).
