Description
i was stuck in a gigantic rut today and felt like drawing some realism to get out of it. i always end up doing self-portraits when i get that urge though, because i prefer doing realism from life than from photos! for me it's more challenging to get colors/forms down that way. also in all my other self portraits i never get my face right. so yet again... for the hundredth time... a self portrait.haha it's creepy... i never realized how much i looked like my mom until i saw the thumbnail for this :b
drawn in photoshop 7.0 with a wacom tablet, textures from [link] for tips on how to texturize check out [link]
p.s sorry if you're getting this twice or whatever. deviantart sucks ass and isn't submitting the right files and all that fun stuff. yay for slow overcomplicated sites.

You REALLY remind me of my friend Brie in this...and all your other pics of yourself actually...I mean, you don't look hugely like eachother, you just remind me of eachother, even if it's just a portrait.
Yeak kay irrelevant.
I LOVE the skin tones...but maybe you could add a little blue in places, just for some contrast to the reds and browns, especially around the nose :3 But it's only a minor thing, the warm colours really work too I especially like how you've shaded the lips and cheek.
The colours relate to eachother really nicely, nothing looks out of place or in-yer-face. The green t-shirt could look odd if not done in the right way, but you've managed to blend it in so it doesn't stand out too much
I also think it's great how you've focused the attention onto the face -- the features on the face stand out more than the neck, hand and hair, and it really draws attention to it. Great job!

i like your stuff. though i am kind of confused on what my opinion about cg art is right now. I really like your pictures like this, and i don't know how to use photoshop or anything. i'm not saying this isn't art, or even that it isn't good art, i'm just wondering if you have ever tried using oil paints or water colors, because this looks like you know how to design a good painting, and i think you could really paint some wonderful things using those media.
by the way, i've looked at a lot of your pictures that i like, so i'm adding you,.... cause you're pretty great.

thanks! i tend to use digital for pieces like this cuz it's cheaper and easier. i like traditional media but i'm not inclined to use it all the time. i do want to get into painting though.

yes the thought did come that it is much cheaper. but i didn't want to prolong the comment.
i have just started water coloring... it's quite fun, though i wish i could afford oils... the problem is, i would have to afford them enough to be able to screw up a lot of paintings probably.

I don't wanna say the obvious, the beautifully rendered selfportrait of yours speak for itself, I just keep wondering about how you nail in such accurate fashion the light in your selfportraits, this one and the others...
I just like that, the values are so different from the ones here, i find them exotic and mysterious...
As always, my admiration to the talented model...

Self portraits aren't so much a sign of narcissism as a sign of "damnit, where am I going to get a life model-- fast?"

Yeah, I'm like you in that if I do a realistic face, I'd rather do it from life...plus my teacher's just don't plain let me use photos anyways. XD I'm actually working on painting 5 self portraits for my painting class. O_o
Anyways, back to you. :b It's really nice how you included the mirror, because I think that the style and look of the mirror says something about you and the lighting is just really nicely done. I really like how you block in forms with your color and it's really nicely detailed in that everything balances out in the end.

Your nose looks a little red--hope you're not sick! It's been ridiculously cold over here in the States, so hopefully you guys aren't suffering, too.
I completely agree about using photo reference. I always used to work from photo until I started working from life for college admission. I can't go back now!

so you did this ref-free? I'm impressed! I love your works as much as the next person, you have style out the ears; but sometimes I forget what a truly talented artist you are. You have such a flair for realism. I love the warm tone of this, and the chunky, painty feeling. And it can't hurt that you drew a cute subject.

its that despair for all the pointless comments?... errr... like my own... cof, cof... must say that, with the hand on the head, the shiny eyes with the size of dishes, and the corners of your lips touching the bottom of your chin it makes this a really gloomy self-portrait. It reminds me of this corny painting, that is almost a legend, we call it "o menino da lΓ‘grima" (the tear boy) [link] , nobody knows where it comes from, it lurks thru the night in to the homes of people with dubious taste, and hangs itself next to tapestry copy of Da Vinciβs last supper.
Well, apart from the gloominess and all the rest, you really have talent, and I envy you! ggrrrrrrrrr ...
