Description
Guys, this is huge! I think I've reached a point where my understanding of colour has finally begun to influence my artwork. This is exciting!!! I decided to take a little break from the troubles of school to do a quick little painting. I've been meaning to draw landscapes and nature for a long time but I never did mostly because it wasn't very economical of my time and resources to do it with say colour pencils. Painting things makes it much easier to cover large areas with relative ease and hence my introduction to scenery. This is going to be an exciting month!Time Taken: 30 minutes
Tools: Robert Simmons Saphire S85 Round 8 watercolour brush
Paint: Victorian Windsor Watercolour
Paper: Strathmore Mixed Media 400 Series 9x12

I'm glad you think so! You can really accomplish lots when you limit your colour palette. Thank you so much!

How did you go about studying color? I find that's one of the things that I admire the most in the art of others, but I can't really find resources that seem to make sense to me away from the basic ones talking about related colors and types of color relationships based on the color wheel.

So when I went to audit the animation classes, I talked to this student who was a very, very impressive digital painter.
I asked him the same question (as well as many others) but he broke it down into some simple, but not so easy steps.
Study the artworks of master painters.
He told me to look at how they shade, how they use colours to express the mood, how they use it to guide your focus.
If you look through enough paintings by masters, you eventually begin to understand what colours work well and what
doesn't.
Practice!
This is huge. You can say you understand colour through studying it, but if you never experiment with it yourself, you'll
never truly understand it.
Prior to this experience, I would just look through papers that talked about colours, their moods, colour wheels, combinations
of colours, etc. But it wasn't practical! It didn't exactly tell you how to use it nicely in combination with other aspects.
I will say this though. It is important to understand some of these, but you really must practice actually playing with them.
My painting of the hawk is a good example of applying his steps: sta.sh/21iv108hwpb5
My first try, I tried painting how it looked like in the photo. It came out muddy and gloomy.
Then, I decided to just throw some colours down and see how it'd turn out. I actually used purple, green, red, orange and
yellows in the construction of the painting and never any black for shading (except eye). Practice and experiment!!!
I hope this helps! And sorry for such an extensive multi paragraph piece DX I really love talking art. You can always ask me
about it; I'm always up to help others improve too!

Any particular tips on how to study paintings done by masters? Beyond just... looking at them. I think I don't understand how exactly one studies, if that makes sense.
I really appreciated your detailed response!!

Tbh, I actually don't know how to explain that :/ I learned some stuff on how to get a working composition on this site:
www.ctrlpaint.com/library/
He makes great tutorials and breaks down abstract concepts into simple steps. I would highly suggest looking at section 4 because he goes and explains how to analyze composition, which is really good for starters.
I think that when youre looking at a painting, you're trying to find where the emphasis is at. Whether it's directional, value, saturation, clarity, you have to find those. Eventually you'll find what looks good together and then just practice. Practice!
And no problem (: I love to spread knowledge to help others out! Anytime!
