Description
This is probably the longest comic i have done like this so fari had to split it into two parts because dA couldn't support how big the file was originally XD
see more of my hetalia stuff here: [link]
my OC Ireland; first seen here: [link]
so this is when she still has short hair; it's really weird, while i was drawing her like this, before i drew the eyelashes, she actually looked like a boy XD
i was learning some general things about the hardships of ireland in my english class because we were studying an irish play; learning about the potato blight and such. and suddenly i was struck with inspiration! because i have a DEEP love for the Irish land, language, culture and history, i just started thinking about it and i started doodling in the lesson. but that wasn't enough! so i made this whole comic.
WARNING: the next bit of info is VERY paraphrased! i do NOT know the ins and outs of this so PLEASE! no one get offended!! or something.... sorry in advance
i think i decided that this part of the comic is during the potato blight; where Ireland's main source of food wouldn't grow due to the rotting of the plant. England did not help much with this ituation if at all; the reason for this being that the government were very into the idea of laizzez faire: where government intervention was kept to the bare minimum. and so England left ireland to fend for themselves. this led to thousands who lost their jobs, homes and eventually they died of starvation and diseases.
many irish reluctantly left their homes for America, thinking that they would have a new life of opportunity and happiness, away from the horrors of their homeland and the oppression of the English.
Green: Ireland (AKA: Kathleen O'Donnel Kirkland)
Red: England (well we need a bad guy XD)
Blue: America (the hero of our story! or IS he???? X3)
at this point in history, i've decided that America doesn't have his glasses yet. in my mind, i think he gets them a little bit AFTER the civil wars. (about 20ish years after ireland goes to America).
Ireland still hasn't started waxing her eyebrows yet. X3
so yeah! part 2 coming up soon!!

(The emotion in her eyes in the begining pannels is heart-wrenching; you really portray her feelings well. I assume the famine you're refering to is the Great Famine (Gorta Mรณr or "Great Hunger" as it is known in Ireland) and it took place in 1845-1849. England did little to nothing to help the Irish at this time; 1 million of them starved to death and another million emigrated away to find a better life, causing the population to drop by 25%. Queen Victoria sent herself ยฃ2000 to help the Irish, but when the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire delcared his intention to send ยฃ10,000, Queen Victoria talked him down to ยฃ1000 so as to not exceed her own donations. However, a group of Native American Chocktaws gathered up a sum of $710 and sent this to Ireland to help. Because of this, there is a reinactment of the Trail of Tears in Ireland I believe on an anual basis.)
(Sorry to ramble I just find the subject fascinating; I've been getting into Irish history a lot this year. If you're curious about the causes of the famine and Ireland's depandance on the potato, the stats at the bottom of this writing piece can help with the basics: [link] )

thank you so much! (this comic was so long ago, i hate the way it looks X'D i think i've improved since then :'3)
yes, i was refering to that period ^^ England REALLY didn't do much to help, using the excuse that they didn't want the Irish to become too dependent on them (which is bollocks XD) i learned about it in history as well as English and i felt myself welling up in the lessons (i'll admit, i wasn't too proud to be English that day... :'3) i didn't know about the Queen and the Sultan though, that's very interesting thank you very much! (smooth move Victoria, i'm sure they appreciated the help X'D lojk) i also didn't know about the Chocktaws, how nice of them, thank you very much!
oh don't apologise! i love the fact that other people share a love for history and culture! ^^ i haven't done much history since secondary school (2 years ago) so i really must start reading up on these things again ^^ thank you very much for such a wonderful comment! and i'm glad you liked it!

(The beginning part though, with her talking to England...it made me want to cry and fan-squeal at the same time. It was great. No, England didn't do crumpets. They were afraid of the Irish getting too strong-the Irish population was going through a huge boom and the English knew how the Irish felt about them. A large Irish population was dangerous. I've also got a bunch of stats on this deviant ID if you're curious...I'm Irish American, so I had something of a vested interest in learning about Irish history and it made me really depressed when I started studying it...it was so awful! And it seems like no one outside Ireland really knows what happened :/)
(Ah...I suppose that's something of how we feel when we study slavery and the Indian Removal in America. It sucks to realize what cruel things your country has done :/ Yeah, I had no idea either until I started doing research and I was shocked. Actually, I used to like Queen Victoria...but the more I learned about her colonial policies, the less I liked her. I thought that bit was interesting as well! The Chocktaws would know how it felt to suffer the hand of another ruler in your own home, so I guess it was a solidarity thing.)
( Yay! I just love history and I love to share ^.^ No problem-I love getting comments so I always feel a bit guilting faving and running XD)

They did more then nothing, there's a reason it's unofficially called the Perfect Holocaust, and this is coming from an American Jew who's ancestors on her father's side of the family immigrated from Germany about 40 years before Hitler went into power!

haha i'm glad! (i think, sorry i made you want to cry XDDD). "didn't do crumpets" lol, i love that XDDD i might just have to look those up XD i know right? people really need to look into this stuff; we study it here, but it mostly focuses on Home Rule and after WW1 and stuff ^^
yeah, but all countries have done something bad in history, it the way the world works and it's not the country's fault, it the people XDD that's why i like that most people can forget the past because it was a different generation, and just keep living X3
i know right, though i'm sure she had her reasons :'3 my parents are historians so i've been surrounded by history my whole life, i now also see things from LOADS of points of view XD which is great when it comes to history XD she wasn't happy with the industrial revolution XDD she was driving through Dudley/West Midlands and she said it was disgusting and an eye-sore (cause of all the smoke, the "black country" and all that) and lowered the blinds of her carriage XD.
i know right!? i love learning about new things! especially to do with other country's history and culture XDD
comments are my life-blood XDD i really like hearing what people think about my stuff and any suggestions they may have ^^ so thank you very much!!

Oh, that's cool! My parents are lawyers so...lots of analyzation of history, but I did the research on my own. Yeah...and Albert did more than people give him credit for. Victoria was just...she was another bigoted English monarch, like all the others who thought it was their God-given right to rule the world. Like Elizabeth I and her damn policy of Irish slave-trading.
It's great! I hope to minor in history in college; I think it'll be fun.
Trust me, I understand that! Comments are the best ^.^

analysing REALLY helps XDDD (i wasn't very good at doing it in essays so that's why i keep it to a hobby XD). Albert WAS awesome! it was a shame he passed away too soon :'3
oh wow! good luck! with your passion (as i can tell you have with history) i know you'll do great!! :3
