It's very creepy and effective, isn't it?

Yes it is! Β
One thing struck me, as I started watching it:
"Okay, we have seven people on a pleasure cruise--a rich man, an actress, a professor...and they get shipwrecked...wait a minute..."
Did this movie indirectly inspire a Tv series?

It's one of my favorite Japanese fantasy films It's got a really creepy vibe, and the sets are extremely well put together -from the ship to the jungle.

Not to mention the Matango got the same creepy laugh as the Baltans

Bad movie? Bite your tongue! It's more Lord of the Flies! The castaways are far more of a danger to themselves than the Mushroom mutants.Β It's amazing how quick the shipwrecked party turned on themselves. And this might have happened whetherΒ the Fungus freaks were there or not.Β All the mushroom mutants seemed to do was sit in their grotto and tell knock-knock jokes, to pass the time.

Love Mantango and "A Voice in the Night." I bought a pretty cool mini Mantango resin figure from the toy maker Gorgoloid.

There were those large 5 inch Japanese figures, but this was just a 2 inch solid resin figure handmade by Gorgoloid. Back in the day, there were Mantangos on trikes. Pretty weird and fun.

Have you notices just how often the movies title themselves "The Attack of..." when the poor creatures are actually desperately defending themselves?
π: 0 β©: 1
Loneanimator In reply to grassa48 [2016-04-27 19:56:32 +0000 UTC]
True, though I think these monsters are pretty much attacking, though they are doing so in a very subtle way. The people turn into monsters.

Yes! What an atmospheric and creepy film with the Mushroom people being more respectable than the humans..the mushroom zombies on the ship reminded me a little of Fulci's in how they stalked.
When Toho wanted to get creepy they really did a great job (like The H-Man).

Loneanimator In reply to single-leg [2016-04-27 19:58:59 +0000 UTC]
Yep; it's beautifully shot and paced. The mushroom zombies are of course more effective than the full-blown mushroom monsters, but all the effects and visuals in this one is really good, including the sets.

Literally its like a shroom induced nightmare with their laughter (I remember them using that laughter later for alien monsters in UltraQ/Ultraman).
Kumi Mizuno as unsympathetic character! She is still gorgeous!
Also the fungus covered rooms were unsettling..Β

I think it's the laugh of Ultraman fave Baltan.
The whole darn film is very creepy! And the performances of the actors are pitch perfect, especially in those tense scenes on board the derelict.
Are you familliar with the William Hope Hodgson short story "The Voice In the Night" on which this film is allegedly based?

I used to own a hardcover book titled 'Science Fiction by Gaslight' that had that story in it. Great creepy piece of work.
Many of the other stories were just as amazing, especially the utterly deranged 'Monster of Lake LaMetrie', which really needs to be turned into a movie. I mean, a guy who removes his best friend's brain after he commits suicide and sticks it in the noggin of an elasmosaurus after he chopped the top of its head off, which leads to an angry human mind in a giant dinosaur? How did the 50's movie makers miss that one?

Did the book also have "The Purple Terror" (or maybe it's "Horror") about man-eating vines?

Yes, that was in there. As well as a story about London being devastated by a massive volcanic rift eruption.

Swamp Thing had a villain, a god of another primal realm that was named Matango, the Keeper of the Fungus
conceptually i think the story was very rich, but it was drawn as if quickly
still the covers were done by someone masterful and i suggest you try to see them
they were the issues slightly following number 100 from the 1980s series
the storyline was titled "Quest for the Elementals", writer was Doug Wheeler, inside illustrator was Mike Hoffman, cover artist's name i've forgotten
do an image search on a major engine
Matango the character-in Swamp Thing-was begun by Stephen Bissette who was penciller during the Alan Moore reign
