The character is a Tang Dynasty monk named XuanZang. He was known for the 15 year long pilgrimage to India. He was also the main inspiration for the famous Chinese novel "Journey to the West".Done in Photoshop

I read the history about this monk in a very interesting book about the Silk Road. I was astonished to see that the "Journey to the West" is based upon a historical fact. I read he was much devoted to the Bodhisattva Kannon, and this is why "Journey to the West" is full of buddhist doctrine and Kannon is portrayed as the most powerful being, the only one capable to stop the monkey (who in Japanese is known as Son-goku, I don't know the original chinese name).
This is a very beautiful painting, by the way. Realistic yet somehow dreamlike. I bow to your talent.

We've learned about the monk back in middle school's history class. I've never read Journey to the West the book itself. Only saw the TV series. The monkey's original Chinese name is Son-Wu-Kung. The other companion of the Monk XuanZang (or Tang-Seng) is the pig demon Zhu-Ba-Jie, river demon Sha-Seng and a white dragon who turned into a horse. XD

The lighting from the lantern implies this, but skin gets really shiny when wet. Maybe some droplets sweeping from his face and hands as they get blown in teh wind as well.
It's just something I noticed, but this is already such an amazingly detailed piece. Gorgeous!

Thank you for the critique. I actually have rain drops streaming down the face, corner of the clothes and flying into the wind. But it seems it's all lost in the small image. Or maybe they weren't visible enough. I'll upload a larger version see if that helps.

I love the atmosphere that this picture conveys. When I look at the picture, I can almost hear the wind whoosing past and the rain pattering against his rainshield. I can see his determination and inner strength on his face as he through the mountain passages...
