Which doctor is it? Sorry for this stupid looking question, but I am not very familar about Dr. Who. As much as I know it was never aired in the german speaking part of europe where I live.

Matt Smith as the 11th Doc. Can be a little confusing as there has been so many!

That one would be the 11th Doctor (played by Matt Smith)
and his companion Clara

There was a new Doctor introduced who fits in between 8 and 9. He is generally referred to as War Doctor (because of his part in the war against the Daleks) so Matt was the 11th Doctor, but the 12th regeneration (which should have been the last regen until he was given more by the Timelords of Gallifrey).
Great show.

I agree that Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor, but there is confusion regarding the number of regenerations. Smith is the 13th regeneration because:
1) First 8 doctors = 8 regens (Doctors 1-8)
2) War doctor = 9th regen
3) Christopher Eccleston = 10th regen (9th Doctor)
4) David Tennant = 11th regen (10th Doctor)
5) David Tennant = 12th (final) regen (still 10th Doctor, caused by his "Hand regeneration" in the episode /The Christmas Invasion/.
6) Matt Smith = 13th (1st?) regen (11th Doctor)
7) Peter Capaldi = 14th (2nd?) regen (12th Doctor)
The final and first questions are caused because timelords are/were limited to 12 regenerations per cycle. Since he was granted a new regeneration cycle, we do not know how long this new cycle is (12, 13, indefinite) or if his incarnation count should restart(11, 12, 1, 2). We also do not know if William Hartnell's Doctor (1st) ever regenerated prior to the audience meeting the Doctor.

Agree. I should have clarified. My version of the DW world is that War Doctor is a regeneration, but from a numbering of the Doctors, isn't called 9. Eccleston is still 9.
So I was only talking about the naming convention, rather than a discussion of where in his regenerations he is. Some people add that when River gave him her regeneration energy, that that might muck up the maths of it too.
Onward with season 9 regardless. Happy Who..

you're very close. each Time Lord has 12 regenerations, meaning 13 lives. Smith's Doctor, had the new cycle not been given, would simply have died, with no regen, as Smith was life 13. Tennant-to-Smith was the 12th (last) regen. Thus, Capaldi's Doctor, despite being referred to as 12, is actually regen 1 of a new cycle.
