Description
Day two of my own personal 'How fast is your spaceship?' week of scifi nerdiness. Today, Star Trek...When I first left home, a friend lent me the entire run of Star Trek Next Gen and that was it, I was hooked (never had TV growing up and no movies... and been trying to make up for it ever since
Someone needs to create a new Star Trek series for TV I say!
Pencil, ink on paper, Paint in photoshop.

Billion times a billion plus... sounds good enough for me, but Data does tend to like his precision

Have you seen the USS Discovery yet? from the bottom it looks like garbage, but from the front its my favorite looking one so far.

It does look nice from the front... I'm a big Bryan Fuller fan, which is making me even keener to watch the show!

Apparently reaching warp ten is pretty much an infinite probability drive, so i guess the enterprise can go as fast as it can and still count as actual "speed".Β

I seem to remember a voyager episode where they went warp ten and it was a bit that way.... probably time of me to to rematch that series!

Lol, i love the NTSC lettering on the big -D.

Yes! Β New Star Trek series in 2017... Β All new characters, new villains, I'm curious to see where they take it (Gene's son, Rod Roddenberry is involved too)...

Actually the speed quoted by Data in miles per hour here is very exactly 1514 times the speed of light, exact to 12 digits after the decimal point, with a little help from the tremendous precision (even greater than Data's) given by windows calculator, I get that it's 1513.9999999999999267928748227549*c. While the speed quoted in kilometers per hour is about 1537.185 times the speed of light. I guess Data ain't so perfect after all, if he can't even convert between miles and kilometers correctly. Wait..... oh no! Look out Geordi! That's not Data, it's actually Lore! He's gonna flip out on you in a moment!
Reminds me of an embarrassing story. Which I shall share with you. In 1995, I was at a star trek convention in Greenville NC. And Majel Roddenberry, the widow of Gene (who played Deanna Troi's mother), was their guest. There was a question and answer session, and I wanted to know how their warp factor number system worked. Because I couldn't make any sense out of it. But as I was one voice in a crowd, I tried to be concise in my phrasing of the question, so I unfortunately said "How does the warp system work?" She of course assumed I wanted to know how to make a warp drive that really works in reality, not that I was trying to make sense out of what warp 2, 4, 7.7, whatever meant, and her answer was "Magic", and the rest of the room ROARED into laughter at my expense. I can only suppose to this day she assumes I'm a deluded nutjob crazy fan who takes the show that seriously. Not that she'd remember my face. She probably doesn't even remember it at all.
Now, after all this time, I can see that the actual answer is that there is absolutely no consistency or logic behind the numbering system whatsoever. Sometimes warp 3 can mean 27 times the speed of light, sometimes it can be 487c, warp 8.4 can be 765000c and 9 can be 834, en.memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki⦠makes this clear how mickeymouse it all is. Thanks internet.
Your faces are amazing. Every one of your pictures I see sends me bursting out in laughter because the faces are so ridiculous, yet somehow still completely recognizable as the people they're supposed to be. How do you DO that?

Is there any indication of how "fast" the enterprise travels in the episode where Barclay merges his mind with the computer? Just thinking that breaks some records as well....
I do hope they do something interesting again someday soon.

I'd forgotten that episode. Not sure what the speed was there.
And I'm with you... a new and interesting series would be fantastic!

I've seenΒ (and loved)Β DS9 a couple of times... bit of Star Trek fan here and have watched pretty much everything except the animated series from the 70's.
Couldn't really use a space station in a how fast is your spaceship though
Cheers!

Agreed. A new Trek series would be excellent, especially with what people can do these days with VFX and makeup.
