Description New issue of Agent X9 "Warlords of phoenix" Modesty story and the second cover I did for the magazine (first one here [link] ) Its just hitting the streets in Sweden so I have permission to post it.

Big Modesty Blaise fan, so it was really great to get another go at a cover - a few more of them and I might start getting a real handle on the character .

All 13 covers for this year can be found at the official Modesty Blaise Agenxt X9 blogsite [link] and include work from Modesty artist Romero and the talented Kim Andersson - the blog is running a "cover of the year" poll there, so go vote if you like!

Awesome stuff - I'm a big fan of Modesty, and this really does it justice.

Brings back memories of covers by artists like Frank Bellamy, et al!

Thanks man! Used to occasionally get Eagle comics here in Australia so I am familiar with Frank Bellamy's work - great stuff. Big fan of Jim Holdaway too - he was the original modesty artist for the newspaper strips and really payed attention to details like outfits etc.

Amazing as always Dave!

As I looked at the details in awe and wonder I noticed, after several minutes, that there is not a stitch of detail on her dress. No color and not even a hint of shading or shadow. It is almost as if you forgot to paint the dress entirely.

But it works! I would never have considered trying this. Your talent never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks! I really like my details and probably take them too far at times, but its nice to sometimes leave stuff out for contrast - leaving her dress as a flat white was very deliberate and makes her stand out more than if I had added the tones. Cheers man!

Is there any particular reason why you didn't paint the dress at all? It looks interesting, thought...

Love the blade

Cheers! The dress is like that for contrast and makes her stand out more than if I had added tones.

Cheers! You can never go wrong with Samurai armour - it was made to be both protective and visually striking and always looks cool in a painting.

I didn't know that Modesty Blaise was still published somewhere... Even if I wonderif they are new adventures or a reprint of the old one's... The same for Alex Raymond's Secret Agent X9.

'Old' stories, translated into Swedish, though the guys there put an effort into getting the best source images to work from.

Intersting. Here in Italy, the series has never been published entirely, only some books with a selection.

Congrats, this has to be one of my favourites from you. I really do enjoy your more realistic approach to some of your works, what fascinates me is your use of limited hues, you tend to stick to a solid colour but somehow just make it work without adding more colours than necessary.

As always excellent shading, the use of negative space for her dress is pretty clever as it instantly draws your eyes to the character.

Top of the pop work dudeman!

Thanks man. Usually Modesty is depicted in an outfit thats depicted as a flat black, so I thought it would be nice to use the same approach with the white for this.

apart from the crappy 1970's version (which hopefully shall remain forever buried and forgotten) it always stuns me that hollywood hasn't done a modesty blaise movie yet

Loopydave In reply to SeanE [2010-11-18 09:15:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, lets not mention that one shall we! They did one fairly recently, but it was a low budget, straight to DVD and was basically filmed so as not to lose the option for a big budget version. Not that I've heard anything about that yet
