Description Modesty Blaise artwork for an upcoming issue of the Swedish comic book magazine 'Agent X-9', who were generous enough to let me post this early as a tribute to Modesty's creator, Peter O'Donnel, who passed away on the 3rd of May, aged 90.

Pencil sketch on paper, painted in photoshop.

You should definitely be happy with the contrast between the characters. It came out GREAT!

Not that I'm telling you how to feel or anything. I'm just saying that I'd be happy if I could do what you can do. But I suppose I'm happy anyway. So that may not meen anything. I need an objective study of some kind. **goes looking for a scientist** LMAO.

And, well - faster is definitely always a good thing. But it seems to me that one of the reasons you take a while to do these things is that you do them magnificently. So I guess it's a really good thing. XD

And as for the lips...well these things happen. If I'm gonna be attacked by rogue lips, I'm just glad they were so finely rendered.

you rock, OD

Her eyes just suck you in, don't they? And those hands are pretty sweet as well.

Thanks wendy. All the great Modesty comic artists drew her with those fabulous 60/70's lashes and really emphasised her eyes - something I tried to capture as well. Not sure I quite pulled it off exactly, but because I'm such a fan of the character, I was more nervous painting her than anything I've done for quite some time!

You nervous? Nah! I don't believe it!

I'll admit I'll have to go look up these other pictures of her to see what you're talking about, but I think you did a great job with her!

It is pretty sweet that you get to make artwork for a magazine

I've done a bit of magazine work, book covers etc before (I work as a professional illustrator), but as a big fan, doing a modesty cover was indeed, pretty sweet!!

hey not to go too personal, but Is it hard to make money as an artist?
I don't mean a lot, just enough to support a "future family"
or should I count on getting a rich wife?

Loopydave In reply to Manechen [2010-08-18 14:13:55 +0000 UTC]

Rich wife would never hurt! I'm always fairly busy, but its not a great way to make lots of money - its more one of those things you really have to love to do, rather than something you do to get rich!

Manechen In reply to Loopydave [2010-08-18 18:19:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah I had noticed that seemed to be the case.
Eh, I really dont need a lot of money I dont think. But then again, I have never had to pay bills, so I would probably be mistaken x.x

Thanks Vince! Modesty Blaise is a pulp novel/comic strip character created by Englishman Peter O'Donnel around the same time as James Bond. There was talk at some stage of doing a tv show, but nothing ever eventuated.

Qutmaster In reply to Loopydave [2010-05-10 08:50:18 +0000 UTC]

Well.
There has been a pilot for a TV-show: [link]

Probably for the best that it never was more...

Then there has been two movies.
One "spy-comic-sixties-barbarella-kind-of-a-movie" where she is (mostly) blond (?!?): [link]

And one that one that Tarraintino's friend Scott Spiegel did in three (come on, how can it be any good then?) weeks: [link]

None of them got much with the original Modesty Blaise to do, more than the name, and Peter OΒ΄Donnell disliked all of them and didn't let anybody do more, since they couldn't get it right.
I even think Willie and Modesty kissed in the first move, but I might remember it wrong.
