Description
I had planned to paint my friends portrait for her birthday, but with one thing or another, it never happened. I ended up doing a little book of silly in jokes and this is from it. Deliberately left areas loose and unfinished and was kind of happy with the end result.Pencil sketch on paper, painted in photoshop.

gorgeous shading ^^ i admire that ability of yours ...and i really should stop saying that hehe
i like the litte details! someone can learn much when just looking at your paintings! like that dark saturated blue around the pupils' glossy highlight point! awesomeness

Danke my friend! I like little details too, and sometimes I wonder if I dont spend too much time on them, but I find a lot of pleasure in painting them.

do you use references for your artwork at all? they look freakin' real, just distorted proportionally in a cool way but otherwise really realistic texture/coloring/shading-wise. I'm gonna cry if you don't. XD

Loopydave In reply to aireeuh [2009-11-18 11:40:53 +0000 UTC]
Dont cry!! This one was a portrait and I based it on a couple of photos I had taken of my friend. On something none-portrait like, I generally start with a concept sketch from my head and then I may shoot some reference if I need to, paint from objects in front of me, hunt through books and magazines for reference bits and just make stuff up. I have a maniquin in my studio that I sometimes dress up in costume to work out wrinkles, and I have a wardrobe full of weird and interesting props I use for reference from time to time.

I'd like to be as loopy as you, Dave. If being loopy means I could draw this well! Love seeing the unfinished aspect! Very cool!

Cheers, though I'm not sure you'd really want to be truely loopy - yes you would get obsessed with details, but you'd also spend at least 2 days a week wondering if you were are in fact a walrus.

Sadly I consider such things as it is. Yet I'm still not as talented as you are. This irks me. Somehow I've been jipped.

Not sure how much talent is involved in being a walrus, and most of what remains, I chalk up to sheer bloody mindedness!

wow, Dave! this is realy cool. its cartoony but realistic at the same time. i love the combination of cartoony shapes and realistic texturing. i just say the close up of the hand and if thats loose then id realy like to see what your stuff would look like when you've been painting through the night and haven't slept a wink. well done dave!

Thanks man! I have a natural tendency to get so engrossed in details that I often forget when to stop, and I've been working recently to leave details just a little unfinished in parts.

how long did this piece take and did you also use the mouse to color it.

Painted with a mouse, and probably took 2 or so days all up - bit hard to tell, it was a 'work on a bit here and there' kind of thing.

stunning work!
how many colors do you use to create skin color?
π: 0 β©: 1
Loopydave In reply to rotsentu [2009-11-16 08:15:33 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I'm working on using more colours- used to use a more monochromtic approach to skintones, but have found from observation and practice that adding variations in the tints, tones and colours across a person tends to make it more believable than less so.

rotsentu In reply to Loopydave [2009-11-18 01:44:52 +0000 UTC]
I thought that it was more a matter of blending few colors
than adding lots of tones. cool! thanks for your time.

It was painted quite quickly and I made no effort to 'hide' my brush strokes, but at this scale it looks pretty slick. As I wrote on someone elses comment, I think I'll post a close up of the hand by itself just so people can see. Cheers mate!

I've always loved this sort of fisheyed forced perspective. Although I've never been much good at it myself. It looks fantastic here (as does all of your work).
I'm especially impressed with the teeth. I find that most artists aren't able to render teeth in a high degree of detail without making them look fang-like, or odd, or mis-colored, or just....not right somehow. These teeth and gums look absolutely incredible. Your ability with photo realism and how you apply it to your illustrations is remarkable.
I...I...
