Real talk, I'm actually very happy to see more of young Pandora. I've tried sketching young Panny out in dorky cringy terrible fanfic-y personal scenes with my characters and having more references is something I'd love to have.

I think Moondancer has always wanted power, so of course he would choose the princess that he thought was most powerful. Pandora would choose the most misunderstood princess, because she herself feels misunderstood, so she can relate to Luna and her struggles. Cupcake on the other hand is a harder one, I think deep down Cupcake just wants to be loved and admired, and seen as strong and worthy. Princess Cadence is loved by all, she is seen as strong, powerful, kind, empathetic. She is valued. Cupcake wants to be seen the same way.

Okay here's my guess for why they chose the princesses they did:
For Moondancer I believe it's because he wants all the eyes on him as he does something glorious! Like dancing or performing awesome magic and he wants the respect of all the nation
For Pandora I'll say she chose luna because luna is/was misunderstood and has gone through a pretty hard time when it comes to earning the respect of her subjects
And Cupcake is a little harder, but I'll say because Cupcake wants to be beautiful just like princess Cadence and powerful and strong as I feel like she had issues with her self (body type and strength) and wants to grow up powerful and strong

I can guess why Moondancer likes Celestia - she's powerful, and was mentee (if I remember correctly) of Starswirl, who we already know Moony has some attachment to - and why Pandora likes Luna - misunderstood but good at heart - but I'm drawing a blank on why Cadence is Cupcake's favorite, so I can't wait to see the reasoning behind that!

Moondancer dresses as Celestia because she is beloved by everyone and highly important, attributes he craves because he is insecure
Pandora dresses as Luna because she admires her dark and dramatic nature along with the feelings of being in the shadow of your elder you love (Luna with Celly and Panny with Twi)
And Cupcake as Cadance because she started out as a humble Pegasus who rose to princessdom because of her inner strengthΒ

Princess merchandise in canon in the show and comics. It seems to be really popular with children. I think there'd probably be toys of Discord, and he'd probably be featured in art and stories, often cast as a villain. I don't think Skyla would be popular enough yet to have merchandise, and as for Pandora....I think there'd probably be mean-spirited joke costumes of her for Nightmare Night, like Equestria's worst princess, or beast princess. Besides that, I can't see there being any merchandise of Pan (unless she made it herself, which she probably would)
