Description Given the sheer insane amounts of stress I've been under lately, this just felt... therapeautic. This piece felt GOOD to draw. I'm proud of this to the point of arrogance.

So here's a sketch of my Sangheili Shipmistress and Swordswoman OC, Beyra 'Kusovai, who is among my oldest and most popular creations.

Time for context. A very long time ago, god, must've been... well over a year by now, I was doing an art trade with the talented artist ~MysteryOne617 We each sent each other WIP's of our progress, but real life stuff interfered, and sadly we dropped out of contact.

Anyway, having been stuck yesterday morning with no wifi and time to kill, I found the linearts she sent me lying around my netbook's hard drive, and decided to do something with them. So I tried my hand at re-creating the design and pose Mysteryone thought up, tweaked with it here and there, and here's the end result. And considering how reliant I've been on digital art the past few months, doing all these little things like thorough shading, inking, all that, it was an absolute joy.

And before one of you points it out, yes, I'm aware Beyra's chest is a LOT smaller than usual. This was intentional, not accidental. No, this is not a permenant change. Just hear me out.

A small part of me is a little tired of seeing EVERY single drawing of Beyra displaying her with absolutely massive tits. Like so large, she'd suffer intense lower back pains from standing upright. Realistically, she is a warrior, and her combat style involves a lot of fast movement and nimble footing, and with what, triple D cup breasts, that's not gonna happen. So for the sake of realism and giving the character a more dignified look, I think this suits her, in regards to a design that can be sexy, but also taken seriously. This design has been heavily criticised by one of my watchers who I showed this to, but I'd like to hear what the rest of you think.

I have a partially coloured version of this, but I prefer the black and white, since that's the one I cleaned all the smudges off after scanning.

Thoughts?

Sona? Not quite. She's just a character, I don't use her as a persona.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it. She's actually one of my oldest characters, I just keep updating her.

Wait, 'as she is'? Do you mean before or after the changes?

After the changes? :/

Yeah....

A while back I preordered, yeah. I'm just getting the normal version, not the limited edition. When I went in to pre-order, the clerk asks "Which version?" I say "Normal". She then asks, "Which console?"

You're welcome, I always enjoy seeing your art...more so if it's something I'm at least nominally familiar with to be quite honest (like Halo or to a lesser degree Warhammer 40K) It all looks really good though, whether I'm familiar with it or not

I'm glad to hear it! I try to make my art identifiable, or at least offer a description to explain what people don't know. I figured based on how many times I've drawn this character, none was required.

Oh, speaking of...do you mind if I ever use any of your names for Halo or ME aliens in any of my fanfics? Coming up with names is always something I've struggled with...and alien names that fit the naming patterns of those species are some of the hardest for me :/

Lorcan0c In reply to princessarien [2012-11-01 10:19:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh? Well which ones did you have in mind?

Coming up with names isn't too difficult. You just need to use a unique source. With my earlist characters, I either adapted or altered an existing name, used an obscure word from an alien language of sorts, or something along those lines.

If you want help naming specific aliens of the ME or Halo franchise, go the wikia page for that species, scroll to the bottom and find the "Notable [X]" [Asari, Turian, etc] section, and you'll be given a list of all the named characters that appear in the series. That'll help you come up with something easily.

I didn't really have anything specific in mind, just wondering if the idea itself was one you were open to...Beyra would probably be one that I'd use though.

Yeah, that sounds like a good suggestion, I should probably do that. I've already gathered that Turians like names with an "us" sound in them, either in their last name or in their first. And Asari seem to favor names using a heft amount "a" sounds, or at least some of the main ones I know, like Benezia, Liara, Samara, Aria...

I had a feeling Beyra would be the one you'd want. If you want to know, here's an odd little story from way back in 2010. At the time of writing up the character, I only had about.. 3 characters kicking around (An Avatar Driver & Na'vi from Avatar, and a Tau millitary commander from warhammer 40k) and wanted to make a Halo character. I was at first considering making a male elite, but it occured to me that everyone and their mother probably already had a character like that, so I tried something different. I found a male Sangheili name "Bero", and instead changed it to Beyra to make it sound more feminine. The odd thing is, I've never run into anyone or anything that shares the name "Beyra", except some town in the middle of nowhere in the Sudan I think... so by all means, you can use the name

Well as I said above, generally 'A' is a bit of a feminine sound when it comes to names, which explains why Asari use it so much. As for Turians and 'us', The Turians, like the Sangheili, are based heavily on the roman empire. (No, I don't care what Halo Legends says. The bulk of Sangheili lore has them resembling the Roman Empire, not the f**king Japanese Samurai. ¬_¬) so that's why they've got the 'us' thing, like spartacus, bruticus, etc. But I agree it is a common trend with Turians. Garrus, Septimus, Victus, and so on.

princessarien In reply to Lorcan0c [2012-11-02 15:20:54 +0000 UTC]

Well one of...Sangheili names are probably some of the harder ones to get to sound right I think...Brutes are rather easy as you just find a name involving "us" or tack it onto the end of something.

Makes sense to me. Turians are definitely high military, all of their names sound very Latin too...probably all the "us"es in their names. Eh, I actually felt the Elites were rather like the Samurai since they first started getting their character development what with all their honor codes and so on and how much they value their own personal honor and that of their family/clan...though they had just as much influence taken from the Greek Spartans and the Romans as well. I think that particular Legends episode probably just chose to heavily emphasis the parallels with their own culture they saw...seeing as Legends was made by Japanese animation studios....sort of the same as what America does if we adopt/adapt one of Japan's series. Speaking of names, what does it mean when a Quarian has "nar" instead of "vas" before their ship name? I know what "vas" means too, but never been able to figure out "nar".

Lorcan0c In reply to princessarien [2012-11-02 15:33:25 +0000 UTC]

They are pretty hard to think of. As I said, look at the list of notable characters and you'll think of something, I'm sure.

It just seemed like the elites were more roman than japanese, with their rank system, the way they train their soldiers, their government, all that. It wasn't until Halo Legends "The Duel", which, surprise surprise, was outsourced to a Japanese animation company as you said, that the Japanese thing stuck. But given the massive backlash 343 got from fan rage, I think they declared "The Duel" to be non-canon, at least that's what I heard.

Oh, I can explain that. When a Quarian is still young and has yet to complete their pilgrimage, they bear "Nar" in their name, followed by the name of the ship they were born on and live on. Once their pilgrimage is complete, they choose a ship to serve on, offer a gift to the ship's captain, and are granted the "Vas" suffix. Let me explain with an example.

In ME1, Tali'Zorah was on her pilgrimage and was born on the Rayya, so as a result, she was "Tali'Zorah Nar Rayya". When she completed her pilgrimage, she applyed to serve on the Neema, and when the gift she offered was accepted, she became "Tali'Zorah Vas Neema".

So basically Nar = Born on, or the more precise translation "Child of", and Vas means "Crew of".

Does that help?

princessarien In reply to Lorcan0c [2012-11-03 06:24:06 +0000 UTC]

I'll definitely be doing that. It's how I figured out the name for both of the Elite OCs I've made so far afterall.

Mhm, I definitely agree that the Japan connections were much less obvious before that one Legends episode, I did notice the similarities when I read the Cole Protocol though, but yeah, they're a lot of other stuff too.

Ah, that's what I thought it was, or seemed to be anyway. I knew that in the first game Tali was Tali'Zorrah Nar Rayya. That makes sense...and heh, I just realized something, Quarians are going to get some pretty funky "crew of"/"child of" ship names once they form an alliance with the UNSC in my fic and the Covenant Separatists have joined up as well XD Quib Quib will look rather tame in comparison, lol And yes, that did help.

If the Quarians got an equivalent of the Spartan program at some point any idea what they'd call it? My other friend I asked jokingly said "Geth", heh :^^': Which would actually kind of make sense if that didn't have negative connotations for the Quarians. I know that the Elites are going to be called theirs the Lights of Sangheilios...dunno if the Grunts or good/separatist Brutes would have their own "Spartan" programs or not >_>
