Mika had quickly realized that Yuu wasn't here to relax and play with the other kids. He'd thought maybe he was just reluctant to be here at first, but no, it was very rapidly apparent that Yuu was going to be causing problems for the adults, which meant bad things would happen.

Luckily, Mika had once been like that, and he always swooped in as soon as he found out Yuu was scheming to stop him from getting into trouble with the caretakers. He didn't want Yuu to find out about the punishments, because he had a feeling that Yuu was the type to get worse and worse until the adults broke him, and he didn't want to see Yuu's spirit broken like that.

This time, Yuu had his heart set on stealing something from the adults' kitchen, which had some foods that the orphans didn't have the luxury of eating most of the year. One of their young friends was having a birthday soon, and they wanted to have a meal that they remembered from before they became an orphan, and Yuu seemed oddly determined to make that happen. Honestly, Mika wasn't sure if it was out of really wanting to help the kid as much as it was about wanting to give the adults a big "fuck you" by stealing from their kitchen, but either way, he was just asking for issues to arise. Mika didn't approve of the idea, and he made such known, telling Yuu, "If you're patient, I can probably do something for Ferid and get him to slip me some-" but Yuu wouldn't have it, because he didn't approve of Mika doing favors for the caretaker that always hovered around.

So Mika found himself sneaking into the adults' kitchen late at night to make sure that Yuu didn't make too much of a mess. If they pulled this off cleanly and didn't take too much, the caretakers might not even notice they had swiped something. Another wyngling had helped them unlock the door but had refused to come in, meaning they were on their own.

And they almost made it out. They gathered the items that the birthday wyngling had talked about and were climbing down from the shelves when the door swung open, letting in the light from a lantern. Mika inhaled quickly and stuffed Yuu into a corner, ignoring the way Yuu puffed up when he slapped a clawed hand over his mouth.

The caretaker seemed drowsy, but it wasn't Ferid, which made this situation worse to Mika. He could beg his way out with favors for Ferid, who had a strange soft spot for him. They headed right over to the icebox, setting the lantern on the counter in the process, and rummaged through it before producing a bottle of milk. Mika made a face when they drank directly from the bottle, wondering if the other caretakers knew they did that, but at least they had the decency to finish it before putting the empty bottle to the side.

The light of the lantern touched the corner where Mika and Yuu were hiding behind some chairs when they picked it back up, and for a moment, Mika stopped breathing, didn't move, didn't even blink. He was terrified that they were going to get caught and something would happen to Yuu, who was getting restless beside him. But the adult just moved out of the room, groggily scratching at their side and not sparing a glance towards their corner.

When the door closed behind them and the room was once again dark, Mika breathed a sigh of relief, letting go of Yuu. He had barely lowered his hand before Yuu smacked it away. "What the hell, Mika?! You made me drop like half of the things we got!" Mika made a motion for Yuu to quiet down, but Yuu was enraged and therefore not willing to listen to reason. "Now we're going to have to clean it up and get more! You're the one that didn't want to get caught!"

"There was a more pressing matter, and they're probably still-" Mika's whispering to get Yuu to calm down was broken off as the door slammed open, the caretaker looking more alert. Mika flinched as they held the lantern up, the light washing over the whole room and settling on the two wynglings, still in the corner behind the chairs.

"You little shits!" the caretaker growled, moving towards them.

Yuu was upset, though, and that meant his magic quirk was igniting, quite literally, little flickers of flame bursting up around him as he stepped forward. It made the caretaker hesitate, and Yuu barked, "Fuck off! Touch me and I'll burn you!"

But it was apparent that he had no real control over the flames, which were tiny and flickered in and out of existence in the space around his face and front claws, and the adult soon realized that too. The dark expression came back over them and they resumed their approach, and once again Mika found himself shoving Yuu back, though it was harder than before, leaving him toppled on his back on the floor.

"This was my idea," Mika said firmly, standing in front of Yuu. He could feel the other wyngling glaring at the back of his head, but he was frozen in shock from being shoved so hard. "I was sick of the slop you guys feed us and talked him into it. Let him go and I won't talk to Ferid about whatever punishment you decide on."

The mention of Ferid gave the caretaker pause, then they slowly nodded, a dark smile taking over their features. "You are Ferid's, huh? He probably wouldn't notice if I threw ya in the alone room for a few days, hm?" Mika's blood ran cold at the mention of the "alone room," but the adult was already picking him up, carrying him under his arm like a sack of potatoes. "You," the adult said, pointing at Yuu with narrowed eyes, "clean this up and get out of here. If that ain't enough of a punishment for ya and you leave a mess, best bet I'll come and find ye tomorrow mornin'."

Mika plead as best as he could with his eyes, begging Yuu to just do what the adult said, before the caretaker turned and hauled him away. There was nothing that Mika could do for Yuu for the next few days if he was sentenced to the alone room, so he just had to hope that Yuu would be reasonable and not do anything rash, though that was a dim hope. At least it wasn't Yuu being sent to the alone room. At least Mika had that as solace.
