Description
While visiting a temple in Vietnam, I caught a glance of this man, teaching, praying and smiling all the while, despite goofy tourists everywhere. The power of a smile is almost unparalled.I know that most people do not really appreciate this type work on DA (i hope more people subit photojournalism), but i would like people to get a chance to see some of my street portraiture...i think it is the most profound type of photography...it opens the mind to the similarities in people.
Thank you.

You know this shot reminds me of a shot I saw in national geographic the other day, was a photo, a portrait, the camera was facing the side of the mans face (filled the right third of the photo), the expression on his face was of a wise person who knew the land, looking into the horizon. For me that photo had so much feeling, and is one of my favourite photos anywhere. I need to find it again so I can give the proper information
Anyway this photo gives me the same feeling, the man looks majestic, and, I can't really put into words how I feel about this photo. But yeah, for me photos like this one you have taken are amongst the best, for me the produce more feeling a lot of other types of photography can.
I talk to much

It's odd to think people don't like this type of photography. I think it's great - it gives us a look at everyday people and something so real. These kind of pictures and the little stories behind them help to capture human nature. I like this one very much specially the candidness and old photo color.

lovely shot... I like how you've captured his emotions! His smile really warms the heart. good job changing the photo into sepia... the aging look works very well.
vietnam is a beatiful place! the people are pretty friendly, haha I remember little kids that come up to me from every direction to try to sell gum!
great capture

While I love his expression, and think you've done well at capturing *that*, I think maybe the image as a whole is just a little bit too blurred. I like journalistic shots (personally) to be crisp and sharp. Also, I think maybe it would be better as a normal b&w. Just something about the sepia that puts me off.
But other than that, of course very good. I love how he just seems to be smiling so *freely* so many people these days /don't/. And of course the sunglasses in his hand is a humorous touch.

my original thought was that it was a dash too blurry, but as i have been reminded by 3 of the professional (and talented) photographers i work with, not everything has to be tack sharp....i showed them all this image and they said it way great. not that " they" are the be all and end alls, but razor sharpness does not always equal merit, especially in photojournalism (oh, and some softness may be due to compression)...it is not always possible when dealing with available light, and not always necessary when the mood and/or the content is there.

I'd like to see more of your street-portrait-kinda-stuff; I love it!
'DA type work', is that in the FAQ? Don't make up assumed rules, and if anyone else does, gently tell them what you think of their gene pool.

I don't know why you would think this isn't DA material. Capturing these moments create some of the most amazing pictures. Nice work!

What do you mean "not DA type of work" ... any work submitted is DA type of work. I think it's a great photo. Although I would have liked to see the tip of that sweet looking cane.

I love this style of Photography. A close relitive of mine who died recently was a Photographer for Kodak and National Geographic for more than 50 yrs. He took many portraits from all over the world, some of wich ended up in Ntnl Geo..... this shot reminds me a lot of that sort of real world, almost journalisim portraiture... shots in time.
excellent work.

I think you should not fert about how people might accept street portraiture such as these. I believet that capturing the moment is just enough to make it greatly appreciated as art. You made us smile by just looking of that mans picture in a frozen moment of happiness... it's great
