I looked at your coloring tutorial and I have two questions. How do you make your *revised* dapples and your markings? I still can't figure out dapples and I have to have multiple coat layers for any markings.

Ooh, dapples- Hm. ^^ When it comes to dapples, my technique tends to vary a bit sometimes but usually, this is how I go about it. I add a new layer, and then I just paint the dapples by hand with a semi-soft brush. I sometimes do it while it's still grey, sometimes when it's already been colored. If it's been colored, I might have to play around a bit with the color on my brush and finally, it all comes down to getting the right opacity and the right layer setting to get the perfect result - which mena sthere is not way I can say this is exactly how you do it - dapples is tough to pull off, so it usually takes some deal of tweaking, but those are the most important steps!
About markings - when you've finished shading the body, do a selection of it. I usually just click outside it and then invert the selection. Keep teh selection active, but add a new layer. The selection will follow to this layer, giving you a silouhette of your horse! Now you start painting your markings. Just use a solid brush at 100% opacity, and paint the markings with care. Once this is done, you can remove the selection. Make ALL layers except the one with the markings invisable! Then you select the markings; either click outside the markings and invert the selection (ctrl+shift+i I think), or click on each marking until they are all selected. It might be good to add 1 pixel of feathering - you should find in the menu - under Selection or Select, or you'll probably have to go back and do some editing later.
Okay, so now you have a silhoette selection of your desired markings. Time to activate your layers again. Make the markings layer invisable or despose of it. Click on the body layer - the selection will follow you there. Just copy and paste. In a new layer, the shaded parts of your body will show up, but only the one syou wnat as markings! Now you are free to color them in any color you'd like, whilst you can color the body underneath it in any other color!
It's smartest do do the markings befor eyou start coloring or adding dapples etc - the markings are not dapple dafter all! If you however have scars or some other markings that is in the very skin of the horse, you should add them to the body before you add any markings! PLay around with it!
Just give me ahout if there's something you don't understand!

I get what your saying. I just had the hardest time trying to put dapples on a grey horse and ended up just dotting her with the dodge brush. Now, off to photoshop land to practice!

Oh! Well I don't do the dapples light! I rather draw the dark 'rings' instead! It makes for a better look!

Nice color contrast.
My only beef, as with most unicorn creations, is the placement of the horn. I know most folks slap it on the skull as shown, but it really should be pointing out from the top of the spine, as if the spine went all the way through the skull and out again.
That's what I think, anyway.

great picture again.
critics: the left back leg. it looks like the waist is touching the ground. =S
Also the colors are to bright for the background. ...what doesnt mean i dont like them! ^^ Possibilities are to make the background more colorful OR you give the horse a blue/gray touch.

Wo-ow, that is one of the most beautiful colouring jobs I've seen in a long time! The light and shadow, just to die for! His eyes are fantastic, not overly bright or overbearing. And I completely adore that background, incredibly realistic grass and cloud cover. The only thing I'd pick on is his feathery legs and the beard, they seem to distract a little from his overall dignity... but that may just be my personal thing of feathers and beard in unicorns showing through.
I also like his striepd hooves. Truely beautiful job!

Aha, I see. I'll have to keep an eye out for that... beards and such aside, it's been a while since I found a good fantasy series.

What I love about your art is how many of the pictures seem to have stormy skies, with the subject and the ground light. I always love when the sky gets dark but the sun still shines on the ground from between clouds. I would love to know how you do your grass. Obviously I could assume you made your own brush, but how do you make the brush have different colors on different parts? (this is light on the bottom and dark on top). Is that an option for the brush, like color dynamics and scattering, or do you do that seperately?

Losmios In reply to HiveQueen [2006-05-20 09:25:56 +0000 UTC]
The key to making good grass is having at lkeast two different grass brushes, preferbly several more.
The color is part color dynamics on the brush settings, and part the dodge and burn tool. With teh color dynamics and change the setting s a lot, and do not use just one setting - and I vary the opacity constantly as well.
