Description A chess board made out of an abandoned boiler plate.

The scrap metal is over 100 years old before I reclaimed it.

The pieces are held on by scrap rare earth magnets (thanks *photozz).

Inside there are over 30 high powered LEDs.

The acrylic bubbles are pressed formed using an old electric oven.

The black squares are an auto body paint, the whole board has 15 layers of auto body clear coat. In addition I am experimenting with a bees wax finish on top of everything.

I'm going to put together a time lapse video of the whole project, this is the start of that video.

Are you still selling the chess board or has it already been sold?

Amazing, simply amazing! I love it. U should make some really trippy chess pieces to go with the board.

Thanks, that video helps me get a clear idea of what that is and to appreciate it. Your metal/wood shop looks cool. I wouldn't mind seeing second part. How long it takes to make it.

This is incredible! You should be DD'd about this! Is there any way to purchase it?

I'm not sure what being DD'd is but thanks.

I haven't come up with a price yet, somewhere around $2,500. I need to see how many hours I put into it.

wow, dont think anyone will pay that much for a good looking chessboard. DD'd means getting a Daily Deviation.

Wouldn't mind playing a game or two on a board that impressive, hehe. Watched the video... looks awesome, and probably fun to work on too, eh?
Was the board made for anything in particular, or just in free time? Seems like a lot of work for a chess board, though the end result seems quite justified.

**your welcome..

Do the chess pieces scratch the finish at all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LostMachine In reply to photozz [2007-08-19 10:16:02 +0000 UTC]

No scratched yet, I'm sure someone will find a way.

The magnets are embedded in epoxy and then there is a layer of felt.

Also after the auto body clear coat there is two layers of bees wax, which worked out better then I planned.

Cool. My thought was that you could overlay a thin sheet of plex. when it scratches up, just replace. What are you using for the blue lights?

LostMachine In reply to photozz [2007-08-27 07:57:37 +0000 UTC]

LEDs for all the lights, I put about 30 of them in there.
